“Out of the night that covers me, black as the pit from pole to pole, I thank whatever gods may be for my unconquerable soul,” so goes the first lines of a Victorian poem written by William Ernest Henley, in 1875, when both his legs were amputated, which to this day, remains a cultural touchstone of not only his native England but the world over, or at least, to those who appreciate good, poignant, poetry. From the avant garde late writings of E.E. Cummings, Robert Frost’s and Keats’ love of nature, to Dickinson’s beautiful, solitary pinings and the sweet taste of Neruda’s sonnets, topped with Bukowski’s dry wit, poetry has well and truly put words and meanings to things the rest of us wouldn’t otherwise make sense out of. Poetry is an art form and an area in literature that has survived for thousands and thousands of years, spanning centuries and becoming more than just closely related to musical traditions. Without poetry, we wouldn’t have music. The earliest poems were written, read and sung to tell history, genealogy and even law. Greece’s Homer and Rome’s Virgil used poetry to narrate battles and conquests, before we even knew what epics and elegies or tragedies were. You may also read business gap analysis templates.

Because of recent translations of older, ancient poetry, during the Romantic period, more ancient works were rediscovered. Why do we write and even read poetry? Why do we study it n English or literature class? Some of us may not be able to extend our poetry-reading after finishing school but there are others who want to thrive in it or simply use it as one of the most powerful forms of writing and self expression that it is. The Beauty of Poetry

Poetry takes words in the English language, a language we thought to be universally understood, until it is transformed to something more beautiful than words could ever do justice with, because every time you read a poem, especially out loud, those words wouldn’t sound the same or mean the same to you. Reading Virgil’s Aeneid even if you have enough understanding of Latin or in its English translation, you would believe you’re reading a story, which in a way it is, but with the pattern of sentences sounding new, with musical notes seemingly coming out of every line. This is where poetry becomes another language you cannot name, with only the writer and the reader willingly trapped in the rapture of words, rhyme or no rhyme. It is the quality and beauty of great poetry through which the foundation and systems of human values are set in focus with the goal perhaps of educating and entertaining the reader. Poems can sometimes free society from its willful ignorance of what’s happening, breathing deeper meanings into past and present societal tragedies such as Percy Bysshe Shelley’s radical denouncement of the privileged class during the Peterloo massacre, in his political poem, “The Masque of Anarchy”, whilst encouraging nonviolent resistance. The poem resonated with last year’s Manchester bombing. You may also read financial analysis samples.

Poets and Writing

The thing with poets is that their senses will always be seemingly heightened, being so aware of what they think and feel thus expressing their thoughts and feelings in the most beautiful, often romantic way. A poet would often be lost-in-thought with a more profound insight of the world around him. For an ordinary person, sunrise is just a sign of another day, for a poet however, the first rays of the sun on a dew-drenched morning would represent multiple things, which would often be deeply-rooted to the joy, sadness, nostalgia or even anguish that they feel. But how do you try to understand a poem? How do we analyze that which is written largely for self expression, without much thought on the “rules” we put on other forms of writing? Some people say poetry isn’t really meant to be understood but felt. But what becomes of the poet or author’s message? Is it possible to feel for something we cannot understand? Maybe, but it is important to understand and interpret what was written because it opens discussion of all aspects of human life, of humanity itself. It also leads you further in your academic, specifically literature studies when you are able to understand and interpret the poet’s objectives so that you can give justice to why it was written or who and what the poem was written for. Poetry Analysis

A poetry analysis is a literary essay focusing on what the reader’s understanding of a poem is. Poetry elements such as theme, structure and writing style should be part of the discussion. As any literary essay, a poetry analysis should be organized with the essay having these sections or parts: introduction with a thesis statement, body paragraphs that are based on evidence from reading and research and conclusion. Developing a statement and finding evidence will require reading of the assigned or chosen poem or work to be read many times, find out its subject, determine its theme, structure and the poet’s writing style. A poetry analysis paper would demand a detailed discussion how the poem’s language contributes to its supposed meaning. This is a writing task that would most likely be graded on your ability to recognize poetic and literary devices; imagery, metaphor and meter while also providing your interpretation of the poem. Your paper should be properly organized and should not end up as just another line by line paraphrasing. Remember that paraphrasing does not an analysis make. Poetry Reading

Reading a poem multiple times is often very important to completely understand its meaning and intended message, then develop a reaction to the way it was written. Reading the poem out loud could help a lot while you also take down notes for your analysis. Take note of observations, emotions and the questions you form as you read the poem because this would be integral to writing the analysis. You may also like sample market analysis.

Other strategies include paraphrasing every line so that you can writ the message in simple terms. There may be times where you’d be confused over words or phrases used, with the likes of Cummings’ “73 Poems.” In this case, you can simply go on and read the poem, avoiding the format by which it was printed. During this stage, you can use a dictionary to gain a broad understanding of the poem’s meaning. You may also like analysis examples.

Meaning

Once you have paraphrased and identified the meaning or message behind the poem’s words and phrases, you can build an idea regarding the poem’s subject as a first step in developing an analysis of its overall theme. The next step would be asking the questions “who” “what” “where” and “why” to set understanding of the work. Finding out the “what” brings the general theme of the poem to the forefront and may also be used to describe its plot, for longer verses. You can also read printable analysis templates.

Your answer to the “who” will mostly be about identifying the speaker or narrator of the poem and “when” could refer to a particular season, time or day in which the poem was set. “Where” would obviously establish the location in the poem and “why” would address the writer’s questions about life, death or everything else in between, including his purpose for writing the poem. You can also read case analysis templates.

Theme

The poem’s topic is used to put meaning and build the theme. Once the general idea of the poem have been identified, the elements of the poet’s style will be useful in providing evidence to support an argument in the poem’s theme. You would have to take note the mood, tone and feelings evoked from the tone as part of the evidence in backing up the theme. Discussion of the theme may also include the use of figurative language-metaphors, similes, symbolism, and hyperbole. In addition, you can include the use of abstract description or other concrete details contributing to the theme. You may also see stakeholder analysis templates.

Poetry analysis is much like studying music. It is more complex than a literary analysis since the meanings aren’t obvious. You have to look for them somewhere along the lines of rhythm and language, and an analytical take on poetry further increases the value of a piece and of course, our learning. Understanding a poem is more challenging because it lies in the symphony of the lines with subtle but deeper points that goes beyond just fiction writing. You can also read hazard analysis templates.

It is more particular on laying out and digesting both the aesthetic and rhythmic qualities of language. It has to depend on something stronger for feelings and thoughts that cannot be easily put in words and it may be because of this, that poetry cannot be reduced to being explained in mere interpretations of something we thought we understood.
