5 Steps to Write a Sample Budget
Step 1: Purpose and Tenure of the Budget
Before making a budget, you should have a clear idea about why are you making it. You may need it for your office, for business, for a project or for personal use. It is also important to determine the tenure for which the budget is to be made. It may be weekly, monthly, half-yearly or yearly.
Step 2: Project the Income or Revenue
The income projections give you an idea of the money you will have in your hand to meet all your expenses. Income sources will be different according to the kind of budget you are making. Apart from the regular income, do remember to include the extra income or non-operating income.
Step 3: List All the Expenses
After income, list down all your expenses. Again it will depend on the kind of budget you are making. Calculate your average spending in a particular period and then allocate an amount for it. Some bills are monthly; some may be quarterly and some yearly. So remember their occurrence to incorporate their effect on your budget.
Step 4: Principle of Prudence
As per this principle, consider your unexpected incomes as and when they occur and in case of expenses, consider them even if there is a remote possibility of their occurrence. This is because an extra income is welcome but any forgotten expense will put you off track from your planned budget.
Step 5: Calculate Your Savings and Review Your Budget
Calculate your savings or net balance of funds. You can make an emergency fund out of the surplus available. Make sure that the budget does not show a deficit as in that case, you will need to cut some costs or go over the process again. Also, review your budget from time-to-time to check if things are going as were planned.
