Key Elements of a Good Cover Letter

Having a strong cover letter does not only stop at how well you explain your credentials to your potential employer. However, there are times when instead you will impress them, you will eventually put them off because you come up too informal or sound like a hotshot. You do not have to tell your potential employer your life story in your cover letter. That is why I have gather a list of key elements that will help you make a great cover letter.

  • Your information – Your cover letter should begin with your personal contact information, such as your name, residence address, and contact numbers. Make sure to write your information on the left margin of the paper.
  • Date – Just like any formal business letter, it is important to include the date of when the cover letter was written.
  • Name, title, and address of the employer – This goes without saying.
  • Salutation – Writing “Dear Manager” in your cover letter is boring. Why not take some time to call the company and ask for the manager’s name so that you can address the letter to a real person?
  • Body – The first paragraph should tell them how you heard about the position. As you transition to the next paragraph, provide a summary of your background and credentials. The next paragraph should demonstrate your reasons why you are qualified for the position. On the last paragraph, make sure to indicate your anticipation for their response.

Avoiding Common Mistakes

Avoid these common mistakes and write the best cover letter you’ve ever written!

  • Repeating what is written in your resume – This is probably one of the most common mistakes when writing a cover letter. Use your letter to highlight your personality, credentials, and interest in the position you are applying for.
  • Writing long cover letters – When writing a cover letter, it is important to keep it short and sweet. You do not have to impress the employer with long cover letters. Sometimes, employers do not have a lot of time to read long and dense cover letters. A lot of times, simple and brief cover letters can help put your best foot forward.
  • Failing to proofread the letter – Grammatical errors can hurt your chances of getting hired as it only shows the employer that you are not careful enough and you do not pay attention to your work.
