The Definition and the Parts of a Medical Leave

There is always a difference between two things that might sound similar in context. The medical leave letter sample and its counterpart are no exception to that statement. The counterpart of a medical leave letter is the sick leave letter. Let us now distinguish the differences between these two in order to avoid confusion. A sick leave letter is a letter where you are requesting your boss or manager or supervisor to grant you to be absent for 1 to 2 days because of common diseases namely having the flu, sore throat, colds, headache, etc.

The medical leave letter, on the other hand, is another kind of sample letter stating that you will be absent for a couple of days or weeks that may range from 5 days to months depending on how severe your condition is. The medical leave means that you have to be absent for longer days than the sick leave.

Things that may cause you to file a medical leave are the following:

  • Minor injuries
  • Severe injuries
  • Heart attack
  • Chemo
  • Operation
  • Severe burns
  • Severe asthma attack

That includes all other kinds of diseases that can cause you to not work for a week’s notice for a year. Just remember that the medical leave is long term while the sick leave is for a short leave only. The medical leave is payable in some states and it would also depend if the company would actually grant that benefit because some actually don’t to save money.

Now if you have finally understood the difference between a medical leave to a sick leave, let us now move on to the parts of this letter and how you can simply state it. “Dear [Boss’s/HR Manager’s Name],

I am sending you this letter to request a medical leave tomorrow. I have suffered a knee injury a couple of hours ago because my car crashed into a lamp post while I was driving my way to work. I will not be able to work on the ask you have given me due to the fact that the doctor advised me to take a rest since my body was so stressed for how many hours today. The doctor said that he will check up on my leg from time to time and expects me to be out of the hospital in 10 days time and the probability of me having crutches is high.

I will still be checking my email from time to time if ever my team has a problem or has some queries. Rest assured that they promised me that they will be doing most of the work for the upcoming event in 7 days time. I will be monitoring them from time to time.

If you have any questions or queries, you can just contact me through my email or my cellular number.

Thank you and I am so sorry for this short notice.”

If you have observed, we have stated the reason for my writing fo the letter in the first sentence of my first paragraph.
