Writing a Successful Lesson Plan

If you are looking to write an effective and successful lesson plan, you will need to invest your time, effort, patience, and understanding the goals and abilities of your students.

  • Know the objective – Write an incredibly simple objective at the top center of your document. If you want your students to learn about the geography of the United States, your objective should be something like “Students will be able to identify the 50 different states and their corresponding capitals.
  • Write the lesson’s overview – It should provide the class with some big ideas about the lesson. Let us take for example, if your class is about English Literature, your overview should cover the history, periods, notable authors, etc.
  • Set a timeline – If you want to cover all the topics in a fixed amount of time, it is better to set a timeline and divide your plan into sections.
  • Get to know your students – Knowing your audience will give you an idea of their learning style and abilities. Make sure to tailor your plan to perfectly match the overall well-being of the group.
  • Presentation of information – There are a lot of ways you can present your lesson to your students. You can use a video, text, illustrations, or even a concept.
  • Do a guided practice – After assimilating the information to your students , you will need to come up with an activity to allow them to use all their learning into actions. This activity can be an independent or a group practice.

There is no right or wrong formula in writing a lesson plan. The effectiveness of your lesson plan depends hugely on the various factors. However, the guidance mentioned above can help you contemplate on some process that some teachers found it useful in their own lesson planning. Lesson Planning Mistakes You Need to Avoid

  • Too much planning – We understand the most teachers want their students to learn as much information, but squeezing the entire semester’s lesson into one single setting can be a bit too much for the students.
  • Not having a clear goal – A lesson plan without a clear goal can get the teaching process off the track. However, if you know your goal or objective, everything will just fall into place and you do not have to worry about what to talk about. All the information assimilated to the students are pertinent to the goal or objective of the lesson.
  • Being too rigid – Being a teacher will require you to be flexible. A lot of times, students have a lot of questions in their minds that need to be answered. Being flexible in your lesson plan can help deal with any issues that may arise during the class.
  • Using the same lesson plan in numerous occasions – As a teacher, you need to understand that each class group is different from the others, and using last year’s lesson plan may not fit the needs and requirements of another group of learners.
  • No plan B – Planning a great lesson plan is great, but sometimes there are unexpected obstacles that may come along the way. Let us take for example, you are planning for a video showing during the class, but unfortunately there is suddenly a power interruption. So what are you going to do? Take another route that will lead to you to the same lesson goal.
