How Long Your Resume Should Be

A lot of applicants are often left wondering about the standard length of the resume. And while there is really no dictated standard on the number of resume pages, here are some points to consider:

  • Although it has been widely accepted that a resume should be limited to one page, there are some instances when you exceed due to your professional working experience or academic background.
  • If you do not have much experience to write, then keep your resume to one page. You do not have to worry if you do not have a lot to show to the hiring party. You may want to take a look through our set of one-page resume templates and download them.
  • It is wiser to send an honest and well-written resume rather than make false claims and writing information that are irrelevant to the position.

Tailoring Your Resume for Each Application

Yes, we understand that you want to land a career in the education industry, but we need you to understand that different employers require different set of job requirements and qualification despite the the same nature of the job.

That is why you need to tailor or customize your resume for each application so that it can perfect match the employer’s unique set of qualifications of the job you want to apply for. While there are no major changes needed, you have to make sure that your skill set, experience, and personal attributes can perfectly meet the standard set by the employer.

Resume Writing: Order of Information

It is always smart to be able to present your resume in an orderly manner. One of the most important things you need to consider is how to present your information so that employers will be able to see the most useful and relevant information for the position you are applying for. See the order of information below:

  • Contact Details – This should include your name, mailing address, phone number/s, and email address. You can also choose to include your LinkedIn professional, although this is only optional. Your contact details should not be written in the header of the resume because oftentimes, software recruitment systems cannot discern or read the information found in headers or footer.
  • Opening Statement – When writing this section, you should write summary about yourself and what you can do for the organization. Think about writing a summary on how you are qualified for the position. Limit your opening statement to six sentences.
  • Key Skills – Experts often recommend to list down 10 to 15 skills that are relevant to the position. Make sure you can link these skills to your experiences, so that the employer can easily see how you can function effectively if they choose to hire your services.
  • Personal Attributes – Writing about your personal attributes works well if you do not have enough work experience on your resume. Having the right attributes can help demonstrate that you are a potential candidate for the job. Limit your attributes between 3 to 5.
  • Academic Background – You should only include your highest educational level, such as your degree and the institutions and dates attended. You can also highlight your academic achievements in bullet list.
  • Employment History – When listing your employment history, start with the most recent down to the oldest. Do not forget to provide your position and the dates

What NOT to Put on Your Resume

Since you will use your resume to impress a potential employer, it is important to be wary which information should not be included when writing your resume.

Even if you’re using basic resume format templates, make sure to avoid these critical mistakes that will put your chance of getting hired at risk.

Private Information

  • Any personal or private information should NEVER be included in a resume. Such information to avoid are your:
    • birth date,
    • gender,
    • ethnicity,
    • religious background (unless you’re applying for a stint at a religious institution).
  • These details are mostly unnecessary and just add clutter.

Typos

  • Failure to proofread your resume before sending to the employer means you potentially lose your chances of getting an interview. Take time to read the information not only twice, but thrice if you have too.
  • You can even ask a friend or a family member to check it for you.

Fancy Format

  • Using blank resume templates may help you with formatting, but it’s also wise to stick to the traditional fonts and formats of a resume.
  • Choose classic fonts, such as:
    • Arial,
    • Times New Roman,
    • Calibri, and
    • Verdana.
  • You should also limit the font size between 10 to 12 points for the main content and 12 to 14 points for the headers.
  • You should also take note not to use large headers when subdividing the sections of your resume.

Graphics and Photos

  • A lot of us may be tempted to incorporate cool images on our resumes. However, including photos or graphics can oftentimes cause problems with the company’s software recruitment system.
  • Of course, if you’re applying as an art teacher, then by all means, do so.

There are a lot of ways to go about generating a resume. But the most important rule is to understand the needs of a job, and build your resume around that need. This way, you present yourself as the best candidate around.
