50+ Free Engineering Resume Templates

Engineering resumes may be more difficult to write than regular ones, especially because engineering job positions are often technical while those in charge of accepting or rejecting applications are not. Most engineers can get the basics of their past projects and experiences down on paper in a chronological and sensible fashion. However, many of them may experience problems when trying to sell themselves to the employer. Therefore, it is very important to focus your efforts on what will convince the employer that you are perfect for the position, and what convinces them are your skills and experiences as an engineer.

An effective resume can make all the difference between getting you to land an interview or getting your resume tossed into the garbage bin. However, knowing how to write a resume can be challenging, especially since each organization has different expectations and standards.

What Makes an Engineer an Engineer?

An engineer is a trained and skillful professional who takes charge in designing materials, structures, and systems while keeping in mind the limitations imposed by rules and regulations, safety and security, and practicality and expenses. The word is derived from the Latin word ingenaire and ingenium, which means “to create or construct” and “cleverness,” respectively.

What Are the Branches of Engineering?

Chemical Engineering

A branch of engineering that applies physics, chemistry, microbiology, and biochemistry, together with applied mathematics and economics to produce, transform, transport, and effectively utilize chemicals, materials, and energy.

  • Molecular Engineering. Focuses on the design and testing of molecular properties, behavior, and interactions in order to assemble better materials, systems, and processes for specific functions.
  • Materials Engineering. Involves the discovery and design of new materials and its applications to engineering.

Civil Engineering

An engineering discipline that deals with the design, construction, and maintenance of the physically and naturally constructed environment, including man-made projects like roads, bridges, and buildings.

  • Environmental Engineering, or Sanitary Engineering. Deals with the treatment of chemical, biological, or thermal wastes, purification of water and air, and remediation or the removal of pollution from contaminated sites.
  • Transport Engineering. Ensures the safe and efficient transportation of people and goods from one place to another.

Electrical Engineering

A field of engineering that deals with the study and application of electricity, electronics, and electromagnetism.

  • Computer Engineering. Deals with the design of computers and computer systems, which may involve the design of new hardware, or a system’s software.
  • Electronic Engineering. Involves the design of circuits that use the electromagnetic properties of electrical components such as resistors, capacitors, transistors, and others to achieve functionality.

Mechanical Engineering

The discipline that applies the principles of engineering, physics, and materials science for the design, analysis, manufacturing, and maintenance of mechanical systems. It is involved in the design, production, and operation of machinery.

  • Manufacturing Engineering. A discipline of engineering that deals with various manufacturing sciences and practices including the research, design, and development of systems, processes, machines, tools, and equipment.
  • Thermal Engineering. The study that deals with heat energy and its transfer between not only different mediums, but also into other usable forms of energy.

Software Engineering

The study and an applications of engineering to the design, development, implementation, and maintenance of software in a systematic method.

  • Telecommunications Traffic Engineering. The application of traffic engineering theory to telecommunications.
  • Web Engineering. Focuses on the methodologies, techniques, and tools that are the foundation of Web application development and which support their design, development, eovlution, and evaluation.

Systems Engineering

An interdisciplinary field that focuses on how to design and manage complex engineering projects over their life cycles. This field deals with work-processes, optimization methods, and risk management tools. Systems engineering ensures that all possible aspects of a project are considered, and integrated into a whole.

  • Biological Engineering. The application of concepts and methods of biology and medicine to solve problems related to sciences, using engineering methodologies.
  • Agricultural Engineering. The application of principles to agricultural fields such as farm power and machinery, biological material process, farm structures, and agricultural resources.

How to Write a Resume for an Engineering Job Position?

  • Focus on the relevant details. Employers only want to see the details of your engineering work history and experience. Keep the information specific to the job and with only one objective in mind, which is to get an interview opportunity. Just make sure you tailor your resume to the specific job position that you are targeting.
  • List down key accomplishments. You may use bullet points when enumerating your accomplishment to make your resume easier to read. Keep the text to a few key points and quantify the results so the employers can easily understand the significance of your work.
  • Be honest. Your resume should be persuasive but never deceptive. An honest and well-written resume will facilitate your job hunt.
  • Don’t forget to proofread. An error in your resume can be a determining factor between you and other candidates. An engineer is supposed to pay very close attention to details, and an error on your resume can only affect your reputation as an engineer.

Quick Tips When Writing a Resume

  • Show your personality and originality through your unique experiences and accomplishments.
  • Give examples based on your own experience when showcasing your specialties.
  • Don’t just write down roles and responsibilities, give relevant and action-oriented information.
