When Do You Use a Student Academic Contract

Remember that there’s always going to be someone that might want or be required to achieve a certain academic goal in order to propel towards success. So a student may decide to set up the contract for himself or herself to keep guarantee that progress is tracked and that he or she does what’s expected.

However, there are times where a student may have strayed away from his or her academic goals. This could result in that particular student to fail subjects or to perform at a level that may not be acceptable in terms of the standards of certain educational institutions. In the event that the contract is something that the student made only for himself/herself, then the only party that needs to be identified is the student in particular. All one has to do is to write down the student’s complete name into the document. This means everything from the first name, last name, and even the middle initial for easy identification.

If it’s a contract that has been set by the educational institution, then the document must be able to point out the name of the institution or the instructor that represents it. Again, it’s very important that you write down the complete name.

Do all of that, and there shouldn’t be any confusion or misunderstandings in regards to who belongs to what role, as well as what it is that they are tasked to do.

Show the Academic Goals That Need to be Achieved by the Student

Once you have managed to identify those that will be involved in the contract, then the next step is to point out what it is that the student has to be able to achieve in order to bring about academic success.   • You must then have to guarantee that whatever academic goals that have been set are ones that can be measured. What this means is that the student, and possibly the assigned instructor in charge of observing the student, must be able to keep track of the progress of each goal that needs to be attained. So long as one knows whether a goal is nearer or further away from completion, then certain actions can be adjusted to ensure that they are attained on time.
  • One of the most important aspects when it comes to academic goals is that they have to be achievable. This means that they have to be ones that the student is actually able to achieve with enough effort and time put into it. This is to guarantee that the student is able to improve in terms of academics, and that the student can feel a sense of accomplishment when the goal has been met. If it’s the exact opposite, then don’t expect the student to work hard toward something that he or she knows is not possible.
  • You must then have to make these goals relevant to the student’s academic career. Write the Tasks to be Done by the Student

Once you have managed to figure out what kind of goals the student will need to be able to achieve, then the next step is to figure out what the student has to do in order to achieve them. By writing down everything that need to be done, the student (and possibly the assigned instructor in charge of observing the student) will be able to keep track of the progress to guarantee that goals are met.

This is where you will have to come up with a list of all the things that need to be done, meaning that you’re going to have to come up with the most effective tasks that will guarantee that the employee is able to meet with academic expectations.

While this will depend entirely on the situation of the student, here are a few examples of what the student will be required to do:

  • To attend all of the classes that the student has registered for the semester
  • To reach a target grade point average
  • To visit each professor at least once a month to gain progress updates
  • To make use of all resources within the institution to attain academic success
  • To create update reports to the assigned instructor in regards to the performance in every class that the student has taken

Although there are others tasks and responsibilities that the student may perform, this is all up to the student or the assigned instructor to decide.

The Reward or Consequence

If a student were to somehow reach the goal, then he or she would expect something in return. This is where you will point out what the student can expect once the goals have been reached. This will give the student the motivation needed to work harder towards whatever has to be achieved.

However, let’s say that the opposite happens wherein the student has continually failed to meet certain goals. It’s best to have consequences that aren’t too harsh (unless necessary) to guarantee that the student will do what’s needed to meet with expectations.

Whether you’re writing down either the reward or consequence, just make sure that you do so in a way that the student is immediately able to  understand what they are.
