What to do if you have an unlimited time off policy
If you think that this is the best type of policy for your company, then here are two things in order for it to work:
Track the employee’s time off
You have to do this in order to know which of your employees are taking the time off and when they started. This helps make sure you know that employees are not abusing the system. You can also use the simple tracking records as evidence during a performance appraisal in the event that the employee’s performance has significantly dropped.
Trust your employees
Since you are giving your new employees unlimited time off, then there should be a degree of trust. You are literally trusting your employees to be responsible enough to take time off only when they need to and they would still be able to give you a good level of performance. Otherwise, if they abuse your trust and keep taking too much time off, then they should not be surprised to see a termination letter arrive on their doorstep.
Once you have been able to create a time off policy for your software company, the next thing that you have to do is to disseminate the relevant information. The easiest way to do this is to include it in the employee handbook and share a copy with everyone through email. Include a message as to why you created the time off policy in the first place and that the employees will have to follow the policy unless they want to face the consequences.
