Common Patterns for Navigation Buttons
Having a website that is easy to navigate ensures visitor retention and enhances engagement. Although there are different kinds of sites present in the web, they all have a general navigation pattern that works in all of them.
- Tabbed navigation. Tabs are used in styling main navigation links as they remind us of paper tabs. They are usually put on top of the page and work best with a limited number of links on the menu.
- Header navigation. Header navigation is a good idea since visitors are usually familiar with looking at the header for navigation links. They are user-friendly because most websites have them.
- Footer navigation. Most users will look for the footer navigation in cases where they can’t find links of contacts or basic pages such as “Sitemaps” and “About Us” in any other navigation menus.

Best Practices for Designing Buttons
Although we have provided you with best grunge buttons to use, you should still not forget the basic principles and best practices of designing buttons to ensure a successful web design.
- Make buttons look like buttons. There could be different kinds of buttons out there to choose from, but you have to be careful in choosing the right composition such as proper visual signifiers and clickable elements for your button design. Consider shapes, shadows, and highlights too.
- Keep it consistent. Regular users of the Internet remember details in the pages they visit and usually associate a particular element or icon into a button. Using consistent button designs in the different pages of your website alone will give a more familiar experience for your users.
- Clearly label buttons. Users avoid interface elements without a clear meaning, or leave the site altogether if they cannot find the buttons on the page immediately. Thus, each button in your user interface should have a clear and distinct level that will make it easier to find.
- Make sure it does what it’s supposed to do. The action button should affirm what task it does and you have to make sure it does that task. Otherwise, it will confuse your users and make them less confident in selecting the correct action, eventually discouraging them to continue.
