Elements of a Good Party Invitation

  • Name of the host: A party will never be possible without a host. Why is that so? It’s because the host is the person that makes the party possible in the first place. The roles of the host include planning and financing the party, though there may be times wherein the host and the planner are two different persons. But regardless of which, only the name of the host needs to be indicated on the particular invitation.
  • Name of the honoree: Not all parties have an honoree, but if they do, it would be a good idea to mention them on the invitation. But what is an honoree? This refers to the person who is being honored in the party. Take for example, a birthday party, it may be planned by one person (host) but the party is held to celebrate another person’s (honoree) birthday. Indicating the honoree’s name on the invitation will give the reader an idea as to who the party is being held for.
  • Statement of invitation: This is the main content of the invitation, and it is within this content that the statement informing the reader that they have been invited can be read. Here, the host expresses themselves in written format that they are expecting the reader to attend the party.
  • Schedule: When writing the date and time on an invitation, there are actually two ways of doing it, and it will depend on whether the party has a formal theme or not. To find out what the difference is between the two ways of writing the schedule, refer to the Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs) section below.
  • Location: The location refers to the place where the party is going to take place, and depending whether or not people are familiar with the place, you can choose to write only its name, include a landmark, or include the street address. If in case you are unsure that the guests will be able to locate the place easily, then you can also include a small map on the layout.
  • Attire: With regards to the attire or dress code, they are usually common in formal events and gatherings. However, you can also set a dress code for casual parties, and a good example of this would be costume parties. If this is the case, always make the attire clear and direct on the invitation to avoid creating any confusion on the part of the invitees.

How to Create a Party Invitation

1. Choose a theme: The first step that you will need to do is to pick a theme for your invitations, and when choosing one, make sure that your theme corresponds with that of your event. Whatever theme you have in mind, use it not only for the invitations, but also for the decorations and the souvenirs, if there are any.

2. Make a draft or sketch: If you wish to make an initial design of your party invitation, you might want to sketch it out first. This way, you can use your sketch as your basis when actually making the design and you will already have an idea on how you can arrange the elements. If you don’t feel like making a sketch, you can simply take down notes describing how the invitation looks and how the elements are being arranged. While this may seem like a lot of effort or may take time to do, it will actually pay off at the end.

3. Choosing a size: There are various sizes that you can choose when making your own invitations, you can go as small as 7″ x 4.88″ or as big as 6.75″ x 13.5″. As a guide, you may refer to the list of the different invitation sizes below, there are sizes intended for both folded and unfolded invitation cards.

4. Downloading a template: After choosing an appropriate size, look for the appropriate template and download it. Templates are abundant all over the internet, but why bother looking for them on different websites when you can go for the ones provided in this article? Using templates can save you a lot of time since they are already pre-designed and will only require you to make a few necessary modifications before you can actually publish or print out your invitations. If you’re looking for beautiful and fully functional party invitation templates, we have them right here.

5. Editing the downloaded template: As mentioned earlier, templates can not be used yet right after downloading since most of the preset text and graphics are dummy elements that only serve as a guide as to how the design looks with those elements in place. For the text, you will absolutely need to erase the preset ones and supply your own based on the party that you are throwing. And for the graphics, you may choose to either add more, remove some, or rearrange them on the design.

6. Finalizing the design: The last step in the process is finalizing the design of the party invitations. Try to decide whether the design already looks appealing enough and uncluttered, or if it still needs a few modifications. Also, try to check whether or not there are any spelling or grammatical errors in the content during this step, and this is referred to as proofreading, which is a must in all materials that convey information.

Simple Tips for an Excellent Party Invitation Layout

  • To ensure that the invitation won’t end up looking chaotic, start the process with a sketch so you’ll have an idea on what elements are necessary and how to arrange them.
  • Keep the design simple and easy to read. The problem with putting too much text and/or graphics is that the design may end up looking distracting and disorganized.
  • In addition to keeping the design simple, also embrace the use of white space in order for the elements to have enough breathing room and be distinguishable from the other elements.
  • When choosing a font, go for those that are creative but still highly legible. However, for formal parties, you might want to stick with either serif, sans serif, or script fonts.

Types of Invitations

  • Party Invitations: A party refers to any event or gathering that is attended by numerous guests, and this event is usually held to celebrate an occasion. A party can either be formal or casual, depending on its purpose, and this is also the reason why party invitations can also become formal or not. Among all the other types, this one is probably the most commonly used since it is highly versatile and will work with any type of event. Also, regardless whether the theme of the invitation is formal it not, adding an RSVP is never a bad idea.
  • Handwritten Invitations: These invitations are the ideal choice for small or private parties that are intended to accommodate only fifty guests or less. As the name suggests, the message or the invitation statement on this type of invitation is written by hand, which actually requires you to exert extra effort, and this is why this type of invitation is very ideal for small parties.
  • Wedding Invitations: These invitations are intended specifically for wedding ceremonies and receptions only, and they usually come with a separate sheet that lists down the invitees and their corresponding roles. Other than that, wedding invitations should also come with an RSVP in order to help the host verify the number of guests.
  • Pocket Invitations: These invitations are just a smaller version of the regular type, but in order for it to compensate for its size, these are usually highly decorative in order for it to stand out. But aside from just being decorative, pocket invitations are still very informative as any invitation should be.
  • Business Invitations: Unlike the other types of invitations, this one doesn’t actually invite the reader to a gathering, a celebration, or any sort of event, business invitations are used when one business is inviting another business to a partnership. Of course, since this is a different kind of invitation, it will not require the use of an RSVP.
