Easter Sunday

Speaking of Easter Sunday, since the month of April is already approaching, let us all know what this celebration really means apart from the symbolic egg we usually see that associates to this tradition.

Easter, also referred as Pascha or “Resurrection Sunday,” is a Christian festival and holiday celebrating the resurrection of Jesus Christ from the dead as depicted in the New Testament. This occurred on the third day of his entombment after his crucifixion by the Romans at Calvary in 30 AD. It is the pinnacle of the passion of Jesus, predated by Lent (also called as “Great Lent”)—a 40-day period of penance, fasting, and prayer.

The week before Easter is known as the Holy Week, and it consists the days of the Easter celebration, which includes Maundy Thursday, remembering the Maundy and Last Supper, as well as Good Friday, which remembers the crucifixion and Jesus’s death. The Easter season starts on Easter Sunday and ends 7 weeks, in western Christianity, with the coming of the 50th day called as the Pentecost Sunday. In Orthodoxy, it is also similar with how Christianity celebrated it. The only difference is that it ends on the 40th day—the Feast of the Ascension.
