Facebook (stylized as facebook) is an American online social media and social networking service based in Menlo Park, California. It is the flagship service of Facebook, Inc. and was created by Mark Zuckerberg, Eduardo Saverin, Andrew McCollum, Dustin Moskovitz, and Chris Hughes (all Harvard College classmates and roommates). Facebook's creators initially restricted membership to Harvard students. However, anyone who claims to be at least 13 years old has been permitted to become a registered user of Facebook since 2006 (local laws may differ).
Facebook can be accessed from any device that has Internet connectivity, including PCs, tablets, and smartphones. Users can create a profile after registering, which would include personal information. They can post text, images, and multimedia with other users who have agreed to be their "friends," or with someone with a different privacy environment. Users may also use a variety of embedded applications, enter common-interest groups, buy and sell products or services on Marketplace, and receive updates about the activities of their Facebook friends and Facebook pages they follow. Each Facebook user has a personal profile that displays their posts and content. In September 2011, the format of individual user pages was updated to "Timeline," a chronological feed of a user's stories, including status updates, images, app interactions, and events. Users could upload a "cover photo" to the layout. More privacy options were made available to users. Facebook extended the gender setting in February 2014, introducing a custom input area that enables users to choose from a variety of gender identities.
