A school is a type of educational institution that provides learning spaces and environments for the teaching of students (or "pupils") by teachers. Most countries have formal education systems which are often mandatory. Students progress through a series of schools in these systems.
The classrooms, where teachers teach and students learn, are of central importance. Laboratory classrooms for science education and workshops for industrial arts education are examples of specialized classrooms. A school may be devoted to a single field, such as economics or school of dance. Alternative schools can use nontraditional teaching methods and curriculum. When the government fails to meet basic educational requirements, non-government schools, also known as private schools, may be needed. Schools for adults include institutions of corporate training, military education and training, and business schools. In homeschooling and distance education, teaching and learning take place independent from the institution of school or in a virtual school outside a traditional school building respectively. Schools are commonly organized in several different organizational models, including departmental, small learning communities, academies, integrated, and schools-within-a-school. Typical schools have many other rooms and areas which may include a cafeteria, a place for PE (such as an athletic field, a playground, gym, etc.), an auditorium, different kinds of labs, a library, etc.
A lesson plan is a teacher's regular guide to what students should learn, how it should be taught, and how learning should be assessed. Lesson plans include a comprehensive guide for teachers to follow during each class period, enabling them to be more effective in the classroom.
