An investor is an individual who allocates capital in anticipation of a future financial return (profit) or an advantage (interest). Through this allocated capital, the investor buys some types of property most of the time. Investment types include equity, debt securities, real estate, infrastructure, currency, commodity, token, derivatives such as options for placement and call, futures, forward, etc. This definition does not distinguish between primary and secondary market investors. That is, both investors are someone who offers capital to a business and someone who buys a stock.

The presumption of a need for security is founded on the experience that, due to a lack of technical expertise, information, or experience, financial investors are typically structurally inferior to providers of financial services and goods.
