What Is a Magazine Cover?
This is the first part of a magazine that encases its pages from front to back, printed with content that attracts a reader’s attention.
As explained by the Illinois Library (an online resource for education), a magazine’s cover is a defining aspect of the medium. So, it’s safe to say that your own publication’s presentation should be up to snuff.
How to Make a Magazine Cover
There’s a fair amount to consider for a magazine’s cover. However, if you’re not sure where to start, then simply read our tips (below) and you’ll be all set!
1. Your Magazine Cover’s Size
Before anything else, plan out the size of your magazine’s pages. Once that’s settled, you’ll already have the size for your cover. Some standard magazine dimensions include 17x11 inches, 16.54x11.69 inches, 8.5x11 inches, and 8.27x11.69 inches.
2. Your Magazine Cover’s Picture
The most striking feature of any magazine cover is the pictures (for both the front and back sides). If you’re opting for photos, then incorporate the images of influential figures. However, photos of products and locations are also prominent choices for a magazine cover.
Alternatively, illustrations are a good choice as well. Whichever you go with yourself, just ensure the images are relevant or indicative of your publication’s inner contents.
3. Your Magazine Cover’s Written Content
There are several bits that make up your cover’s writing. Let’s start with the layout on the front. The top and most noticeable section is the banner. In the banner, there’s the title, date, issue, and volume.
Next, there are the taglines. These act as a sort of preview for what a reader will find within the magazine’s pages. Taglines can contain quotes of a page’s content or offer some kind of catchy summary about different topics.
And then there’s the cover’s back. Publishers sometimes leave this free of writing, with the picture being the only notable element. However, if you prefer having dialog here, then write down a blurb. A blurb, similar to taglines, provides a summary of the magazine’s insides--just that it does so with a few hundred words instead.
4. Your Magazine’ Cover’s Font
It’s important that your magazine cover’s text isn’t bland in appearance. After all, they also play a part in getting people’s attention. So, when picking the font’s style, colors, and sizes, go with what lends well to the picture’s look and the magazine’s overall tone. And don’t be shy about mixing up these elements--experiment and see what works.
So, with that, just remember our tips and you’ll have a perfect cover for advertising your magazine! But, if you need a little more help, then go ahead and download one of our Sample Magazine Cover Templates!
