A quotation is the repetition of a speech or text sentence, phrase, or passage that someone has spoken or written. In oral speech, it is the representation of an utterance that is inserted by a quotative marker, such as a verb of saying, (i.e. of something that a speaker actually said). Besides quotative markers, quotes in oral speech are often signaled by unique prosody. Quotations are distinguished by quotation marks in the written text. Quotations are also used to present well-known portions of claims directly attributed to their original source through citation and punctuated with quotation marks.
To reflect someone's point of view, quotes are also used as a literary device. They are often commonly used when an interlocutor wishes to present a proposition they have come to know from hearsay in spoken language. A quotation can also refer to the repeated use of units in some other type of expression, in particular parts of works of art: elements of a painting, movie scenes, or sections of a composition of music. Quotations are used for a variety of purposes: to clarify the context or to support the claims of the work in which it is referenced, to provide direct information about the work being cited (whether positive or negative in order to discuss it), to pay attention to the original work or author, to make the quotation user look well-read, and/or to comply with copyright law.
