Association football, also known as football or soccer (short for "association"), is a team sport in which two teams of 11 players play with a spherical ball. It is the most common sport in the world, with approximately 250 million participants in over 200 countries and dependencies.
The game is played on a pitch, which is a rectangular field with a goal at either end. The goal of the game is to outscore your opponent by pushing the ball past the goal line and into their goal. The game is won by the team with the most goals. If both teams have scored the same number of goals, the game is called a draw, or the game is sent to extra time or a penalty shootout, depending on the competition's format. Soccer is regulated by a set of rules referred to as the Laws of the Game. The two teams compete to get the ball into the goal of the opposing team resulting in a goal. Except for goalkeepers inside the penalty area, players are not permitted to touch the ball with their hands or arms when it is in play. Other players kick or pass the ball mostly with their feet, but they can also use any other part of their body except their hands and arms. Soccer or football is governed internationally by the International Federation of Association Football (FIFA) which organizes World Cups for both men and women every four years. The most prestigious competition in club football is the UEFA Champions League.
