Father’s Day is holiday that celebrates and recognizes the efforts, sacrifice and influence every father has on their family and in society,
When is Father’s Day?
Around the world, Father’s day is commonly celebrated on the third Sunday in June. In this event, numerous children such as sons and daughters in many lands and countries give their deepest gratitude and heartfelt appreciation as they honor their dear fathers, grandfathers, and/or great-grandfathers because of their role as the head of the family. As one of the pillars of a child’s emotional being along with the mother, the father acts as the protector, provider, and disciplinarian inside the family.
History of Father’s Day
The celebration of Father’s Day originated back in 1909. Being raised along with her five siblings by their Civil War veteran father after their mother died, Sonora Smart Dodd of Spokane, Washington started to have the idea of celebrating Father’s Day while listening to a sermon on Mother’s Day by Reverend Dr. Henry Rasmussen. Her idea was supported by the local religious leaders back then and then the first Father’s Day was celebrated on June 19, 1910, which is the month of the birthday of Dodd’s father, however, it was Richard Nixon signed an official proclamation as he established Father’s Day permanently on the third Sunday in June nationwide in 1972.
Father’s Day Importance, Purpose
The main pillar that holds a family all together is a father, daddy, papa or in whatever language he is called, he is the patriarch of the family; this is why every year a day is dedicated to honoring fatherhood and paternal bonds as a way to say thank you and to give importance to their role in the family.
Understanding a Father’s Role
Fathers play a big responsibility in the family and even in society. They are providers, protectors, disciplinarians, and someone who is tasked to guide and teach their kids to grow up as responsible adults, although single fathers also play a mother’s role as well. Father’s Day is that time of the year to showcase how vital their roles and responsibilities are.
Show Appreciation
Because fathers just like mothers play a big responsibility it is important to show how much we are grateful and appreciative of all their hard work and support. Although it is important to give thanks on a daily basis, Father’s Day makes it an extra special day for them. Families are often seen celebrating by going somewhere or engaging in fun activities.
Honoring All Types of Fathers
Fathers are not the only people who have played a “fatherly role” in our lives. Thus during Father’s Day, we commemorate brothers, uncles, grandfathers, or any important male figure that has created a positive impact in one’s life. Each of them has played a significant role that is worth commemorating.
