When Is Mother’s Day?

In the United States and in most countries around the world, Mother’s Day celebrations are held on the second Sunday of May. On that day, daughters and sons spend time honoring the motherhood of their moms. They shower their mothers with love, gifts, flowers, and sweet Happy Mother’s Day wishes. However, some countries celebrate this event on a different date.

Mother’s Day History & Facts

Mother’s Day is a holiday celebrated worldwide and is one of many family traditions to commemorate the maternal bonds between mothers and their kids. In 1908, Anna Jarvis created the American incarnation of the special occasion, and fast forward to 1914, it became an official holiday in the United States every second Sunday of May.

The concept of Mother’s Day celebration can be back tracked to the time of the ancient Romans and Greeks. Part of their culture was to organize festivals to honor Rhea and Cybele who are their mother goddesses respectively. However, the type of Mother’s Day that we celebrate today is more heavily derived by Mothering Sunday which is an old Christian Festival.

Mothering Sunday is a religious activity and a major tradition in some European towns and countries, especially in the United Kingdom. The event was held in Lent’s fourth Sunday. Originally, it was considered as a period when Christians would revisit their main church (mother church) in their hometown and attend a special service. As the years and decades went by, Mothering Sunday became more of a secular holiday than a religious tradition. It faded as a major custom and was eventually overshadowed by the American incarnation of Mother’s Day between the 1930s and 1940s.

Angel Mother
By Joana Fuchs

Mother, you’re the angel
who brought me into being
and watched over me.
You guided me, sheltered me,
repaired and restored me.
When I was lost,
your focused attention
and unconditional love
lifted me and showed me the way.
I give you the credit
for the best parts of who I am today.
I don’t have words or gifts,
or anything that’s worth enough
to let you know
what having you in my life has meant to me.
Happy Mother’s Day, Mom.
I love you with all my heart.

Wonderful Mother
By Pat O’Reilly

God made a wonderful mother,
A mother who never grows old;
He made her smile of the sunshine,
And He molded her heart of pure gold;
In her eyes He placed bright shining stars,
In her cheeks fair roses you see;
God made a wonderful mother,
And He gave that dear mother to me.

Mother
By Nikita Gill

The water of her womb, your first home
The body she pulled apart to welcome you to the world.
The spirit in you she helped grow with all she knew.
The heart that she gave you when yours fell apart.
You are her soft miracle.
So she gave you her eyes to see the best in the worst.
You carry your mother in your eyes.
Make her proud of all she watches you do.

A Mother
By Christy Ann Martine

A mother wraps her love
around the heart of her child,
keeping each beat steady
through the rhythm of life
until wings take shape
and it’s time for the soul
to take flight.

What ‘Mother’ Means
By Karl Fuchs

“Mother” is such a simple word,
But to me there’s meaning seldom heard.
For everything I am today,
My mother’s love showed me the way.
I’ll love my mother all my days,
For enriching my life in so many ways.
She set me straight and then set me free,
And that’s what the word “mother” means to me.

To My Mother
By Christina Rossetti

To-day’s your natal day;
Sweet flowers I bring:
Mother, accept, I pray
My offering.
And may you happy live,
And long us bless:
Receiving as you give
Great happiness.
