Muharram

Muharram is one of many Muslim holidays that marks a significant event in Islamic history. Whether you’re a Muslim or not, Muharram is an occasion you should recognize and respect; and since it’s fast approaching, we’ll discuss it today.

Muharram Definition & Meaning

Muharram is among the four sacred months of the Islamic calendar and is seen by Muslims as the second holiest celebration after Ramadan.

Muharram, also called Muharram-ul-Haram, is the month that marks the new year of the Islamic calendar and is observed in different ways by Muslim communities worldwide.

When Is Muharram?

Muharram happens on a different date every year in the Gregorian calendar, and the reason behind it is that the Islamic calendar is 11 days shorter. Muslims start observing Muharram every year after the new moon sighting on the last day of the Islamic calendar.

Muharram History

Muharram is a tradition, a practice founded by the Prophet Muhammad. This festival is said to commemorate the martyrdom of Imam Hussein who is the grandson of Muhammad, who was slain by a cruel ruler during the Battle of Karbala. Thus Muharram is referred as the month of remembrance.

Muharram Purpose, Importance

Muharram is an important period of the Islamic calendar as it is a time of commemoration of the most significant figures and events that shaped Islamic culture.

Pay Respects to the Death of Imam Hussein

Imam Hussein is the grandson of the famed Islamic prophet Muhammad. Muharram is the month that Shia Muslims mourn the death of Imam Hussein and his family. In Muharram, the Shia Muslims offer prayers, offer sacrifices and avoid joyous gatherings as a way of paying respects to Imam Hussein.

Commemorate the Martyrdom of Imam Hussein

Shia Muslims not only pay respects to Imam’s death but also commemorate his martyrdom in Muharram. Some Shia Muslims perform painful public rituals such as self-flagellation with chains, chest-beating, and cutting of foreheads as a way of honoring the hardships faced by Imam Hussein. It partly parallels the reenactment of the Stations of the Cross performed by devoted Christians and followers of Jesus Christ.

The Observation of Ashura

Ashura is an important day in the month of Muharram. It’s the 10th day of the month and commemorates the time when the Israelites were saved from the wrath of the Pharaoh by Allah (God). Sunni Muslims celebrate Ashura by fasting, a practice they learned from the Prophet Muhammad. In 622 CE, Muhammad met the people of Madina and discovered from them that the Jews fast on Ashura as a way of gratitude to Allah for saving the Israelites.

What’s In Muharram?

Muharram is a solemn period in the Islamic year. It’s a month of mourning, sacrifice, and commemoration. That said, there are no music festivals, long late-night parties, beautiful gatherings, and other joyous events in Muslim communities. Instead, most Muslims do fasting, offer prayers in Mosques, and perform sacred ritualistic sacrifices.
