What is a Business Card?

A business card is an identity tool that's commonly used by business people to share their contact details with clients and other entrepreneurs. Ideally, business cards contain the holder's name, the company's name, their profession or position in the company, and various contact details such as their phone number, email address, and website. Nowadays, many business cards also come with the card holder's social media address in addition to the ones mentioned earlier.

How to Create a Stunning Business Card

Although we've got printable business cards in InDesign and blank business card templates, it's always better to learn the basics of creating your DIY business cards to have freedom over the design and content. Here is a step-by-step guide that you may refer to when making business cards from scratch. These instructions are foolproof, which means it'll be impossible for you to mess up your business cards.

1. Set up Adobe InDesign

Launch Adobe InDesign and start a new project. Under the Intent menu, select Print and in the Number of Pages menu, write 1 unless you're making double-sided business cards. To set up the size of the business card, click on the Page Size's drop-down menu and select US Business Card. Alternatively, you can manually input the width and height to 3.5 inches and 2 inches, respectively.

2. Create Layers and Apply a Background

After setting up InDesign to specifically make personal or corporate business cards, create a new layer for every element you wish to add to the layout. For each layer, add a text placeholder by clicking on the "T" icon on the left sidebar. These placeholders are meant for your content, simply repeat the process for the other layers. Also, apply a background color or image to the layout to add life to your business card.

3. Choose a Font Type and Size

Just before you can start adding the text, you will need to decide first on a font type and size. In terms of type, simple ones such as Serif and Sans Serif are the best choices since they look professional and they are very legible. For the size, just make sure that the text is big enough for reading, but not too big that it'll clutter the layout of your creative business card.

4. Add the Necessary Details on the Business Card

Now that everything's been set from the layers, the placeholders, and the choice of font, you can finally start adding the details on the business card. Add the text inside the set placeholders and arrange all the placeholders in the given layout. To prevent cluttering your business card design, limit your contact details to only those that are actively being used. Also, organize the objects properly to keep your business card neat and presentable.

5. Save, Export, and Print your Business Cards

Once you've finished adding the details and organizing them on the layout, save your work in a document file format of your choice. Afterward, export your finished work in PDF since a lot of printers support this file format. And this is highly applicable if you prefer to have your modern business cards printed professionally. After printing your business cards, you can finally start handing them to prospects and other business people.
