How to Create a Survey in Google Sheets?

A survey is a kind of research conducted to gather information and responses from a selected group of individuals or a specific target market. The data collected will then be divided into categories and will be filtered base on the importance and relevance of its contents. The output will then be analyzed to create and devise a future action or decision.

Online surveys are more flexible, cheaper, faster, and more accurate in selecting their target audience. Because of the growing number of users, several online survey tools (e.g., survey monkey, mysurvey, sogosurvey) were developed. Businesses usually rely on online surveys to perform market research, employee and/or customer satisfaction surveys, and more. Google sheets provide easy and manageable formats, perfect for creating a survey material that you can use for both personal or business. You can also create your own survey material or choose one from their pre-made themes.

1. Point Out the Aim of Your Research

The objectives of your research should be specific and quantifiable to achieve and satisfy the purpose of the survey. It should embody the main concern of the study and should also help in determining the criteria of your target respondents. By doing so, formulating the right questions will be quick and easy.

2. Use Customer Friendly Language

Use general terms and simple language to get a satisfactory response from your answerers and avoid using acronyms, jargon or technical terms, and/or complicated words or language that may confuse them. It's better to keep it plain and understandable to utilize the time for respondents to complete the research survey than to waste it in explaining.

3. Stay On Track

In constructing the survey questionnaires, avoid throwing unrelated questions or include questions that you think can be useful for other project plans or research. Don't stray away from the main focus of your study. Doing so will confuse your respondents and will eventually cause them to lose interest in the survey.

4. Keep Your Survey Short

With the influence of modern technology, our attention span dropped down from 12 seconds to merely 8 seconds based on research made by Microsoft Corp. Taking this into account, long surveys are inappropriate especially if you're conducting online or printed surveys. Create survey questions that are relatable, current, and can lead to relevant discussions and customer engagement. This will grab the respondent's attention and will produce a positive response.

5. Conduct a Trial Survey

Test the effectiveness and reliability of your survey questionnaire with the aid of an effective test plan. Send the survey material to people that you know so you can collect the results and get their feedback right away. Determine the strengths and the weaknesses of your questionnaire from wordings and formats, to the orders and transitions. This will also pinpoint the areas of improvement and will ensure that the questions are not bias or leading.

6. Organize and Analyze the Output

Filter the survey results and rank them according to the magnitude of the contents. Interpret the information base on your research objectives and extract significant insights out of it. Compare the data to a personal experience or other related instances that shows great relevance to your objectives and draw your decisions and future plans using this reference.
