Calgary Noise Bylaws

Purpose:

The purpose of the Calgary Noise Bylaws is to maintain and enhance the quality of life for residents by regulating excessive noise within the city limits. These bylaws aim to strike a balance between the rights of individuals to enjoy peace in their homes and the legitimate activities and events that contribute to the vibrancy of the community.

Section 1: Definitions

In this bylaw:

  • "City" means the City of Calgary.

  • "Noise" means any sound which annoys or disturbs reasonable persons with normal sensitivities.

  • "Decibel (dB)" means a unit of measurement for the intensity of sound.

  • "Construction" means any building, erection, alteration, repair, or demolition of any structure.

Section 2: Prohibited Noise

  1. No person shall make, cause, or permit to be made any noise in the City that disturbs the peace of any individual, including but not limited to noise:

    • Created by yelling, shouting, or using loudspeakers in public spaces between the hours of 10:00 PM and 7:00 AM.

    • Emitting from any premises or motor vehicle that exceeds the decibel levels specified in Schedule A.

    • Created by construction activities between the hours of 10:00 PM and 7:00 AM, except in cases of emergency repairs authorized by the City.

Section 3: Exemptions

  1. The following activities shall be exempt from the noise restrictions outlined in Section 2:

    • Emergency services vehicles during the performance of their duties.

    • Activities authorized by a permit issued by the City.

    • The sound emanating from public events authorized by the City.

Section 4: Enforcement

  1. The City may designate officers to enforce the provisions of this bylaw.

  2. Any person found in contravention of this bylaw may be subject to fines as outlined in Schedule B.

Section 5: Penalties

  1. Any person who contravenes any provision of this bylaw is guilty of an offense.

  2. Fines for offenses under this bylaw shall be as specified in Schedule B.

Section 6: Severability

  1. If any provision of this bylaw is held to be invalid, illegal, or unenforceable, the validity, legality, and enforceability of the remaining provisions shall not be affected or impaired.
