A video game developer is a software developer that specializes in video game development, which is the process of making video games and their associated disciplines. A game developer may be a single person who handles all tasks or a large company with employees divided into individual disciplines such as programming, design, art, testing, and so on.
A video game developer may specialize in a specific console (such as Nintendo's Nintendo Switch, Microsoft's Xbox One, or Sony's PlayStation 4) or on a variety of platforms (including personal computers and mobile devices). Developers of video games specialize in unique genres (such as role-playing video games or first-person shooters). The majority of video game publishers have development studios (such as Electronic Arts’ EA Canada, Activision's Radical Entertainment, Nintendo EAD, and Sony's Polyphony Digital). They are referred to as "publishers" rather than "developers" because publishing is still their primary activity. Developers can be private as well (like Bungie, the company that produced the Halo series for Microsoft's Xbox, was). First-party developers, second-party developers, third-party developers, and indie developers are the four types of game developers. A first-party developer works for a corporation that makes video game consoles and designs only for them. A second-party developer describes game studios that take production contracts from platform holders and create games that are exclusive to that platform. A third-party developer may also publish games, or work for a video game publisher to develop a title. Self-funded developers are referred to as independent or indie developers, and they usually build indie games.
