City of Calgary Bicycle Bylaws

Article I: Purpose

This bylaws were established by the City of Calgary to promote the safety, efficiency, and well-being of cyclists, pedestrians, motorists, and other road users within the city limits. By regulating the operation of bicycles, these bylaws aim to create a safer, more accessible, and sustainable urban environment.

Article II: Safety

1. All cyclists must wear a helmet while operating a bicycle within the City of Calgary, in accordance with provincial helmet laws.

2. Cyclists must adhere to all traffic laws and regulations, including obeying traffic signals, and signage, and yielding to pedestrians at crosswalks.

3. Proper signaling must be used by cyclists when turning or changing lanes to alert other road users of their intentions.

4. Cyclists must maintain a safe distance from pedestrians on sidewalks and shared pathways and must yield to pedestrians at all times.

Article III: Traffic Regulation

1. Bicycles shall be operated on roadways, bike lanes, or designated cycling paths unless otherwise permitted by signage or regulations.

2. Cyclists must ride in the same direction as the traffic flow, keeping to the right side of the road unless making a left turn or avoiding hazards.

3. When riding in bike lanes or shared pathways, cyclists must yield to pedestrians and give audible warning when passing.

4. Bicycles must be equipped with lights and reflectors when riding during low light conditions or at night, in accordance with provincial regulations.

Article IV: Infrastructure Development

The City of Calgary will continue to develop and maintain cycling infrastructure, including bike lanes, shared pathways, and bike parking facilities, to encourage cycling as a sustainable mode of transportation.

Cyclists are encouraged to use designated bike lanes and pathways whenever possible and to report any maintenance issues or hazards to the appropriate city authorities.

Article V: Community Well-being

Cycling is promoted as a means of enhancing community well-being, providing opportunities for exercise, recreation, and sustainable commuting.

The City of Calgary will support initiatives to educate residents about the benefits of cycling and promote active transportation options as part of a healthy lifestyle.

Article VI: Enforcement

Law enforcement officials are authorized to enforce these bylaws and may issue warnings or penalties for violations, including fines and citations.

Penalties for violations of these bylaws shall be established in accordance with municipal regulations, with the aim of promoting compliance and accountability among cyclists and other road users.

Article VII: Amendments

These bylaws may be amended by the City of Calgary through the appropriate legislative processes to address changing needs and circumstances related to cycling within the city.
