A hotel is an establishment that, on a short-term basis, provides paid lodging. Facilities offered within a hotel room can range from a small room with a modest-quality mattress to large suites with larger, higher-quality beds, a dresser, a fridge and other kitchen appliances, upholstered chairs, a flat-screen TV, and en-suite bathrooms.
Only the most basic guest services and amenities can be provided by small, lower-priced hotels. Additional luxury guest facilities such as a swimming pool, business center (with computers, printers, and other office equipment), childcare, conference and event facilities, tennis or basketball courts, gymnasium, restaurants, day spa, and social services can be offered by larger, higher-priced hotels. To allow guests to recognize their rooms, hotel rooms are usually numbered (or named in some smaller hotels and B&Bs). Some high-end boutique hotels (such as 5-star hotels) have rooms that have custom interior decoration. As part of a room and board contract, most hotels offer meals. In the United Kingdom, during certain prescribed hours, a hotel is required by law to serve food and drinks to all guests. Capsule hotels in Japan have a small space suitable for sleeping and shared bathroom facilities only. In size, purpose, complexity, and expense, hotel operations vary. To distinguish hotel styles, (such as underwater, beach resorts) most hotels and major hospitality businesses have set industry standards. Some of the most famous hotel chains in the world include Hilton, Taj, Marriott, etc.
