How to Make a Complex Organizational Chart in Apple Pages
From hospitals to construction firms, the humble organizational chart is suitable for a company of any size. After all, Investopedia (a resource for business and finance) explains that organizational charts are used for both whole companies or just a particular department. And so, this diagram is definitely up for sorting out employee structures, no matter how big!
Putting together an organogram is simple enough. But, if you’d like to know how to fully utilize Apple Pages, then consider our tips below.
1. Remove the Document Body before Creating Your Chart
Apple Pages is a fine pick when it comes to making a complex organizational chart. However, before working on the diagram itself, the page needs a slight adjustment first.
With a fresh file ready in Pages, open the Document menu found in the side toolbar (on the right). Under the Document tab, uncheck the Document Body option. When that’s done, adding and editing inserted objects is now easier!
2. Identify Your Chart’s Contents with a Descriptive Title
Now that your document page is all set, start by naming your chart. This part needs the Text option, which is in the upper toolbar.
Simply click the Text button and place the new text box by click-dragging across the desired spot. Make sure that the title is positioned at the top of your page. While the text box is highlighted, enter an informative title—something similar to “Customer Care Office Staff” or “Healthcare Project Department.”
3. Use Simple Shapes in Your Complex Organizational Chart
In an organogram design, shapes are used for containing each member’s name and position. Add these using the Shapes menu in the upper toolbar.
From the Shapes menu, select an oval or rectangle as your first shape (mix it up with other simple shapes later for effective categorization). Click-drag the shape into place, selecting it afterward to type in the aforementioned details. Start with the highest position (like a manager or supervisor) in your company or department. Progress downwards while building your diagram, going lower and lower in the hierarchy.
4. Place Lines between Your Members’ Shapes
Don’t forget about showing the professional relationship between each member. For this, you need some lines.
CMD+click two adjacent shapes to highlight both at once. At the very top of Pages, go to Insert > Line and choose one of the Connection options. Your selected shapes now have a self-orienting line!
