A timesheet is a way to document the amount of time spent on each job by a worker. A timesheet is now also a digital document or spreadsheet, usually a sheet of paper with the data organized in tabular format. Depending on the duration for which the timesheet is made it can be a daily, weekly, monthly, yearly, sheet. The time cards marked with time clocks will act as a timesheet or provide the details to fill one. These ones, too, are mostly digital now. Timesheets came into use as time books in the 19th century.
Originally designed to measure payroll for an employer, timesheets can also be used for accounting for management. The start and end times of tasks or only the length can be tracked by the Timesheet. A thorough breakdown of tasks performed during the project or program may be included. This data can be used for accounting, customer billing, and increasingly, for costing, forecasting, monitoring, and managing projects. Some businesses offer software or services for web-based timesheets that provide a way to track payroll, billing, and project management time. Comparing expected costs against real costs, as well as monitoring employee performance, and recognizing troublesome activities is one of the key uses of timesheets in a project management setting. When users avoid doing or reassigning unprofitable work, this awareness will guide corporate strategy.
