When we hear the word nanny, the first thing that comes to mind is the film Mary Poppins. The way the iconic character taught all those values to the children is reminiscent of what nannies are in a nutshell: they help take care of children in a household. The modern-day nanny are babysitters, but babysitters look after children temporarily, while nannies are more dependable, even staying for long periods of time to help develop children into well-rounded members of society.

To Care and Assist

A nanny, childminder, child care provider, or mother’s helper is an individual who provides care for one or more children in a family as a service. Basically, nannies were servants in large households and reported directly to the lady of the house. Today, modern nannies, like other domestic workers, may live in or out of the house, depending on their circumstances and those of their employers.

Here are different agreements nannies can have:

  1. Live-in nanny. A live-in nanny is less common today than in the past. Usually, a live-in nanny is responsible for the entire care of the children of their employer. This involves anything from washing the children’s clothes and cleaning the children’s rooms, to assisting homework, and preparing children’s meals, as well as taking children to and from school and activities.
  2. Shared nanny. There are families who employ what is referred to as a “nanny share” where two or more families pay for one nanny to take care for the children in each family on a part-time basis.
  3. Night nanny. A night nanny often works with children from newborn to five years of age. A night nanny can have a teaching role, helping parents to organize good sleeping patterns, or resolving the sleeping patterns of a child. The Night Nanny works together with the family’s requirements and principles.

Regardless of the different nanny types, the main focus is to take care children and assist them on their needs.

What to Do When Hiring a Childcare Provider

  • Consider looking for a potential nanny via a nanny agency that is reliable and reputable. Not only do most reputable agencies have all the needed work of choosing candidates for you and doing background checks, but they can also help you create a contract to govern the relationship and terms between you and your nanny, which can be an essential document.
  • Interview applicants carefully. Ask them particular questions that relate to your family. Find out what their past jobs were and if they are ready to do the job you are looking for assistance with.
  • Consider the applicant’s appropriate childcare experience. Has this person actually been paid to care for a child before? A potential nanny should have at least one year of prior experience as a nanny.
  • Always pin down the fundamentals. Address as many factual employment issues as you can at the start of the relationship. Discuss when your nanny can take vacations (many families offer it only when they take their own) and backup options if in case she gets sick.

Take note that these are some of the most important things you need to consider when looking for a nanny. With the proper process, surely you will get the right one for your kids and for the family too. Make sure that Job Application forms are always handy whenever necessary.
