6 Steps to Write a Non-Profit Proposal

Step 1: Write An Executive Summary

The executive summary is the first pitch to your nonprofit. It serves as the potential funders’ introduction to the activity or projects your organization is hoping to get funds for. You should talk about your programs as well as the services you provide to the community, where the money would be used and the total amount of money requested.

Step 2: Create A Project Narrative

This should be around ten to fifteen pages. The first three pages should be a discussion of your target audience, why you’re in need of funds and the impact of your project on the community. All these should be built on facts, so make use statistics and how the funding source would be able to help the area.

Step 3: State Objectives

After explaining your narrative, proceed to discuss your nonprofit’s mission or at least, the goals and objectives of your next activities. Set a time frame to complete the tasks then provide specifics about the key individuals in your team and the resources needed. Explain how the project will be a significant part of your nonprofit’s ongoing efforts.

Step 4: Set A Budget

Outline a budget that provides your target funders with information about how you’ll be using the funds. While you want to be convincing, be honest and include overhead costs and an additional budget breakdown for materials and supplies. In case you’re also expecting to receive additional funds from other sources, don’t forget to include it in the budget.

Step 5: Include Your Nonprofit’s Information

Your funders will want to know more about your organization’s service, its fundraising efforts in the community, the causes you lead and support as well as how you fare compared to other nonprofit organizations. This is where you list down relevant milestones, awards and recognition received. Talk about your leadership and what makes you capable of achieving your goals.

Step 6: Wrap It Up

After organizing the necessary elements of your proposal, you’re all set to write your conclusion. Your conclusion should be able to summarize how the funds would benefit your audience or the community you’re serving. In no more than two pages, briefly explain why your nonprofit is worth the funding and its long-term impact on your audience.
