Eid al-Adha Definition & Meaning
Eid al-Adha, which literally translates to “festival of sacrifice” in English, is a traditional Muslim celebration that commemorates Ibrahim’s willingness to sacrifice his son Ismail to Allah.
Eid al-Adha is an Arabic phrase that means “feast of sacrifice.”
When Is Eid al-Adha?
Eid al-Adha happens on the 10th day of the Islamic calendar’s final month called Dhu al-Hijjah. In the Gregorian Calendar, the date of Eid al-Adha shifts around 11 days earlier yearly. That said, there are no specific dates when this holiday occurs. But for 2022, Eid al-Adha has been confirmed to start on the evening of July 9 (Saturday) in US time.
Eid al-Adha History
Eid al-Adha has ties to the Prophet Ibrahim (Abraham) who was commanded by Allah to sacrifice his son, Ismail (Ishmael) as a sign of obedience. When Ibrahim was about to sacrifice his son, Allah provided a ram or lamb to sacrifice instead because of his willingness to sacrifice his own son in the name of Allah. Eid al-Adha commemorates this sacrifice, where an animal is ritually sacrificed and consumed by family members and the rest of the meat is given to the needy.

After beautifying the template, make sure to save it. Click the three-dotted icon in the upper right corner and select Save. Keep your Eid al-Adha Instagram post in the meantime. Upload and share it to your Insta account on the day or the day before Eid al-Adha.
