National Patriots’ Day

National Patriots’ Day is a general holiday that is unique to French Canada. The holiday holds deep meaning for the province of Quebec, the French-speaking region of Canada.

National Patriots’ Day Definition & Meaning

National Patriots’ Day is a public holiday in the eastern Canadian province of Quebec.

It is a special day of observance that highlights and commemorates the struggle against British rule in 1837 and 1838 and to honor the patriots who rebelled against the Crown.

When Is National Patriots’ Day?

National Patriots’ Day is an annual provincial holiday that is observed on the Monday preceding May 25th. In 2023, National Patriots’ Day falls on Monday, May 22nd; it was previously celebrated on May 23 in the year 2022.

National Patriots’ Day History

In 1937, the local municipality of Saint-Denis-sur-Richelieu in Quebec organized the centennial celebration of the 1837 Rebellions to honor the struggle and fight for democracy. Decades later in 1962, the celebration eventually became an annual event. Then on the 6th of October in 1982, the Quebec Governor-in-Council declared it Fete des Patriotes or Patriots Day; but the provincial holiday was eventually renamed and moved from the Sunday closest to November 23rd to the Monday before May 25th.

National Patriots’ Day Purpose, Importance

Although it is rarely recognized as a statutory holiday in the rest of Canada, National Patriots’ Day is an important day for the province of Quebec. The reasons below describe the primary purpose and importance of Journee Nationale des Patriotes or National Patriots’ Day.

Commemorate the 1837 Rebellion

National Patriots’ Day is a day dedicated to the memory of the 1837 and 1838 Rebellions. The armed resistance movements occurred in Lower and Upper Canada and were provoked by the lack of political reform in the colonies. British loyalist forces eventually won and it resulted in the unification of Upper and Lower Canada.

Highlight the Struggle Against British Colonialism

The 1837 and 1838 uprisings lasted almost a year and patriots who sought freedom from British rule were unsuccessful against the government. The rebellion was subsequently crushed and the Province of Canada was created as a result. National Patriots’ Day remembers the struggle and sacrifice of the men who revolted in the name of democracy and freedom.

Celebrate French Roots in Canada

The eastern province of modern Canada used to be French territory until the British colonized the area. National Patriots’ Day is a day that highlights and recognizes this important distinction. And it is also a way for French-speaking Canadians to celebrate their unique history and identity.

What’s in National Patriots’ Day?

National Patriots’ Day is known in Quebec as the long weekend in May and for both locals and tourists, dozens of events and activities are lined up for the statutory holiday. Parades, marches, speeches, concerts, fireworks, live performances, and even re-enactments can be expected during National Patriots’ Day. Some families take advantage of the extended weekend  to bond over outdoor activities such as hiking and fishing.
