Lailatul Barat

Lailatul Barat is regarded as an important celebration for the Islamic community. It precedes the holy month of Ramadan and is mainly observed in South Asian, Middle Eastern, and Southeast Asian Muslim countries.

Lailatul Barat Definition & Meaning

Lailatul Barat is an Islamic holiday that highlights the generosity and mercy of Allah that is bestowed on all people.

Lailatul Barat is a significant religious, social, and cultural event; however, customs and traditions may vary depending on the country or locality.

When Is Lailatul Barat?

Lailatul Barat is observed every 14th and 15th night of Sha’aban, the eight month of the Islamic calendar. The Lailatul Barat, which is also referred to as Shab-e-Barat, falls on March 7 and 8 in 2023.

Lailatul Barat History

The Muslims believe that Allah comes down from heaven to forgive sins and generously bestow His mercy on Lailatul Barat. And since it happens during the time of Sha’aban, it is deemed a significantly holy night as it comes a month before Ramadan. It is for this reason that Muslims are encouraged to spend Lailatul Barat in prayer and fasting for the whole 2-day procession.

Lailatul Barat Purpose, Importance

Many Muslims consider Lailatul Barat a very important and holy night. There are several reasons why this is so, as described and explained in the statements below.

To Pray For Forgiveness

Lailatul Barat or Shab-e-Barat is a holy opportunity to repent and seek forgiveness. Consequently, the holy night is also regarded by many Muslims as a time wherein Allah generously grants forgiveness to all men and women. But in the same way, individuals must also ask forgiveness from other people just as Allah offers them forgiveness.

Commemorate the Revelation of the Quran to Muhammad

Lailatul Barat is also a time to commemorate the revelation of the Quran to the prophet Muhammad by Allah. It is believed that the Quran was revealed to Muhammad in the year 610 A.D. The Quran is Islam’s most important text and holiest book.

To Offer Prayers for Ancestors and the Dead

Shab-e-Barat or Lailatul Barat is also a chance for Muslims to pray for their dead ancestors or family members who have passed on. Believers are encouraged to offer and recite prayers for the salvation of their dead relatives’ souls. And additionally, to pray that God also forgives not only their own sins, but also the sins of their deceased ancestors.

What’s in Lailatul Barat?

Lailatul Barat is marked by various solemn activities and festivities such as fasting and visiting the graves of ancestors. Muslim communities everywhere offer prayers, sacrifices, and donations during this important holiday. And in many predominantly Islamic countries, students and young children are given a holiday and classes are called off in observance of Lailatul Barat.
