Purim

Purim is an important Jewish holiday as it centers around a story of freedom and triumph over oppressors. The Jews celebrate it as a religious festival and it’s spiritually ingrained in their culture and traditions.

Purim Definition & Meaning

Purim which is also called the Feast of Lots is a Jewish holiday that commemorates the saving of the Jews from the hands of Haman, the royal vizier of Persian King Ahasuerus in the Achaemenid Empire (5th Century BCE) who wanted to kill all of the Jewish subjects of Persia.

Purim is a Jewish festival that celebrates a popular ancient story in the Book of Esther about how the Jews were saved from Persian rule, specifically from the oppression of royal vizier Haman and Persian King Ahasuerus who is commonly known as Xerxes I or Xerxes the Great.

When Is Purim?

Purim is celebrated by the Jewish community on the 14th of the month of Adar in the Hebrew calendar; that means its date changes every year in the Gregorian calendar. So by referring to the Hebrew calendar, the Purim celebration in 2023 will start on the evening of March 6 (Monday). However, some Jews celebrate it on the 15th of the month of Adar which falls on March 7 (Tuesday).

Purim History

Historians believe that the earliest celebrations of Purim occurred in the 5th Century BC based on the Bible’s Book of Esther. The ancient Jews observed the first-ever Purim as a way to celebrate their triumph over Haman. Since then, the Jewish celebrate Purim with songs, costumes, meals, carnivals, gifts, and other fun activities or events.

Purim Purpose, Importance

Many people have heard about Purim but haven’t really grasped how significant it is to the Jews. It may not be a religious holiday as popular as Christmas Day and Eid al-Fitr, but it should be regarded with the same level of respect because of its importance to the global Jewish community.

Celebrate Victory Against Persian Persecutors

Throughout history, the Jewish people suffered abuse and oppression from powerful foreigners, invaders, colonizers, and empires. Because of that, they savor the victories that they achieved and one such victory is their triumph against Haman. Every Jewish family around the world commemorates that historic event every year on the 14th and 15th day of Adar.

Feasting

The Book of Esther mentions that Purim is to be celebrated with feasting and gladness. That said, the Jews spend the Purim holidays preparing lavish food recipes and drinks. They also engage in singing, dancing, and just partying in general.

Charity

Other than feasting, the Book of Esther also mentions that giving gifts to the poor should be done in Purim. Many Jewish families, especially the wealthy ones, will be donating charity to the less fortunate—an activity that they call “mattanot la-evyonim.” They mostly send gifts that help the poor with their daily needs such as food and clothing.

What’s in Purim?

During the Purim celebrations, Jewish communities will be feasting with friends and family. Some will be helping out the poor by giving food, clothing, and financial assistance. There’ll also be ceremony events and stage plays reenacting the historic triumph of the Jewish people in the 5th Century BCE.
