International Music Day Definition & Meaning

International Music Day is a global event that highlights the importance of music and recognizes the work of musicians around the world.

The aim of International Music Day is to channel music and use it as a tool to promote unity and peace in communities and countries everywhere.

When Is International Music Day?

International Music Day is observed every year on October 1st. Through the efforts of Lord Yehudi Menuhin and the UNESCO International Music Council, the first International Music Day was celebrated on October 1, 1975.

International Music Day History

The United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization or UNESCO, an attached agency of the UN, established the International Music Council in 1949. After 24 years, the Council passed a resolution during the 15th General Assembly in Lausanne, Switzerland that formally recognized the importance of having a day dedicated to music. But it was only on November 30, 1974 that the International Music Council’s president, Lord Yehudi Menuhin, wrote a letter to members of the Council declaring that October 1 be International Music Day. The following year on the 1st of October, the first International Music Day was celebrated.

International Music Day Purpose and Importance

Millions of people regard music as the center of their lives and the purpose of their existence. It does not matter if you are a seasoned musician or simply a big music fan, International Music Day is a day for everyone to enjoy.

Celebrate Music as a Universal Language

Music has been called the universal language because of its ability to bring different people-regardless of culture and circumstance- together. Music does not only possess the unique capacity to allow people to feel different emotions and feelings; it is also a vehicle for creativity and inspiration. International Music Day is an opportunity to share and spread the love of music, wherever you are in the world.

Promote Different Kinds of Music Genres

Like spoken languages, music can come in different types and forms. International Music Day acknowledges this diversity of music genres. From hip-hop, jazz, house, country, rock, folk to popular music, the holiday celebrates the different types of music and also encourages listeners to explore new genres of music.

Recognize the Work of Both Amateur and Professional Musicians

Musicians, like any other occupation, play a role in society. And it is not merely limited to those who play or perform music; those who create, produce, and arrange music should also be acknowledged. International Music Day is a day that gives recognition to the countless people who work in music-whether in a professional or amateur sense.

What’s In International Music Day?

The activities and events on International Music Day are as diverse as the different genres of music. Depending on a community’s objectives and resources, different people and organizations celebrate the holiday in their own way. Musical performances are usually staged and similar events are organized on International Music Day. But most individuals simply listen to music, pay homage to a favorite artist, or even learn to play a musical instrument to commemorate the holiday.
