We exist in a world where beauty standards are set ridiculously high. A perfectly chiseled jaw, thin nose, and fair skin are considered beautiful in today’s society. But life doesn’t work that way—we aren’t carved by the Greek gods themselves to have picture-perfect features. Instead, we work with what we have. For these standards to be attainable somehow, we conceal our imperfections through makeup and beauty treatment. And the study of these is called Cosmetology. If you wish to teach Cosmetology to aspiring cosmetologists, you need a Cosmetology lesson plan to create an outline of your topics. And to be able to teach Cosmetology, you must be adept at your craft, first and foremost.

What Is a Cosmetology Lesson Plan?

A cosmetology lesson plan is a detailed outline of the topics to be covered within a certain period. Goals or objectives are set by the teacher to ensure that students will learn something. Underneath these goals are methods and resources to be used to attain these goals. The methods in teaching must be creative to pique and retain the interest of the students. But prior to this, the teacher must be well aware of the students’ strengths and weaknesses for the goals and methods to have a linear order.

Understanding Cosmetology

Cosmetology is the application of different beauty treatments. These beauty treatments include hair treatment (styling, coloring, and cutting), skin treatment, makeup application, and nail care. Aside from beauty treatments, they are also required to practice retailing or entrepreneurship. Part of the training is how to attract and retain customers. People who want to study Cosmetology may enroll in a Cosmetology program.

Cosmetologists study anatomy and physiology basics to familiarize the bone structure of the person’s head and face. These branches of Science are helpful when applying makeup, hair styling, and hair cutting. To handle customers of different temperaments, Cosmetologists are required to hone their customer and retailing skills.

According to an article by Job Monkey, between 2018 and 2028, the demand for cosmetologists will increase by up to 16%. This is evidenced by the current population’s investment in beauty treatments, particularly in hair treatment (hair cutting, hair styling, and hair coloring). Cosmetics is among the top choice of relaxation for most and it might be a good idea to invest in it. Sample businesses related to cosmetics would be a hair salon and a beauty salon

How to Create a Cosmetology Lesson Plan

A perfect Cosmetology lesson plan doesn’t exist. It takes patience and years of experience to produce one that’s close to perfection. Lesson plans are created so you wouldn’t enter the classroom empty-handed. Here is how to make your very own Cosmetology lesson plan:

1. Determine the Needs of Your Students

Different strokes for different folks. Your students have different learning styles—visual, hearing or auditory, tactual, kinesthetic, or a combination of all these. Suit your teaching methods according to your students’ learning styles to make sure no one gets left behind. Think of activities that can be done individually and in groups.

2. Set Your Objectives

At the topmost part of the sample plan, indicate your objectives. State the expected outcome after all the topics have been taught. For example, you want to teach Hair Straightening to your students—your sample objective would be, “Students will learn how to straighten the hair and what medicines are essential to straighten it.” Setting objectives will have your focus aligned and geared towards something.

3. Create a Timeline

Topics cannot be absorbed by your students all at once. Instead, break your topics into parts and incorporate them into your timeline. Your timeline should be reasonably set for you to attain your objectives. You may start with the easier topics then advance to the more difficult or complicated ones. Also, encourage interactive learning, where students can contribute their beauty treatment skills and inputs.

4. Prepare the Materials Needed

What materials are needed for your beauty treatment lecture? Do you need hair straighteners, nail polish, and a makeup kit? Prepare your materials according to the lesson for the day. A missing item or material may make it hard for your students to fully grasp the topic. To avoid this problem, prepare your materials in advance.

5. Have Your Lesson Plan Reviewed

After creating your lesson plan, have it reviewed by your immediate head or principal (if you are working in a school). He or she will assess if your simple plan is approved or not.

6. Practice Makes Perfect

Like a declamation, you should also practice your teaching in front of the mirror. You will be able to see how you look like in front of your students. If you are enthusiastic and passionate about your craft, then your facial expressions and body language will give it away. Practice your teaching and maintain a happy disposition while applying all forms of beauty treatment.

The concept of beauty may change from time to time. What’s in today might be out tomorrow, and that’s enough reason to never dwell on a particular thing. As a cosmetology teacher, you should instill in your students that beauty is not only skin-deep. Instead, it goes deeper than what the naked eye sees. Though there’s no harm in making yourself physically appealing to everyone, we should also cultivate the true beauty that is within.
