21+ School Development Plan Templates in DOC | PDF

Every school requires a plan which has certain goals, objectives, and some mechanisms to achieve some objectives that are decided by the school at some point. This plan is known as a school development plan or SDP. It can be considered to be an in-house activity that is generally carried by in-school teaching and non-teaching staff. It also involves the opinions and insights of the community or parents and other stakeholders. The school head is the leader who will set targets and chalk out ingredients on how these can be achieved.

How to Make a School Development Plan?

Step 1: Determine the School’s Current Situation

If you are planning for healthy development, you need a good understanding of the existing school practices and its outcomes. This is the starting point for any development effort and acts as the base against which a school’s development efforts are evaluated. Know what is the current situation of the school, for instance, start gathering information about the current student outcomes and existing practices must be collected systematically.

Step 2: State Desired Results

Your school development plan must state what development in the outcomes a school wishes to see. Mention the desired developments that may include development in student achievement, school attendance, and student attitudes and engagement. The plan helps in recognizing the need to prioritize, provide the time that will be required for sustainable development, and also sets realistic expectations.

Step 3: Design a Development Strategy

After deciding the desired outcomes it wishes to develop, the next step includes deciding how these developments will be achieved. It is the strategy or strategies that the school intends to implement. The plan can make some changes in the school practices and can also identify what will be required to implement the strategy. This may include changes in culture, staff deployment or the physical resources that are required for effective implementation and some staff professional development.

Step 4: Calculate and Monitor the Results

This step includes how developments in results will be calculated and confirmed. The conclusion to your plan about the development requires measures that can also be compared in the future. The changes that have been made must also be large enough to show some meaningful development rather than minute fluctuations.

Step 5: Reflect and Learn

Lastly, a school development plan must include a plan for reflecting on and then learn from the improvement efforts. The objective should be to review the implementation of the development strategy and then evaluate its impact on the outcomes.

School Development Planning Process

A school development planning process is:

  1. Systematic:

It includes a systematic approach to the planning work that is already being implemented in schools and it coordinates and some planning activities into an overall plan.

  2. Collaborative:

It is considered to be a collaborative process that brings the whole school community together in shaping the school’s future. This depends largely on the collaboration of the principal and the teaching staff and also includes appropriate consultation with all key stakeholders in the school community.

  3. Ongoing Process:

It is an ongoing process that is rooted in a school culture of systematic self-review. These policies and plans are regularly developed, implemented, evaluated and revised in the light of the school’s basic aims and changing needs.

  4. Progressive:

It can be termed as a cyclical process that produces accumulative and progressive results as each cycle builds on the results of the previous cycle.

  5. Enhancing:

A school development plan can be termed as a means, not an end but a means of enhancing the quality of the educational experience of the students in the school. And this is done through the successful management of the transformation and changes. The process of this plan is minutely focused on the education requirements and achievements of the students and also on the professional development and empowerment of the teachers.

Importance of a School Development Plan

Schools must have a clear sense of direction properly expressed in vision and mission statements along with the aims and objectives as well as an effective strategic plan. The school development plan helps the school in many ways:

  1. It helps in providing a sense of direction to the school so that it determines where it wants to see itself in the future.
  2. It helps in establishing aims and priorities for the school based on which the school will implement their plan.
  3. It helps in identifying the requirements that need to be done to bring the developments in the school.
  4. It also helps in identifying the needs of the staff of the school that is important to the plan as well.
  5. It helps in monitoring the effectiveness of the process of teaching and learning and also the teacher-student relationship.
  6. It helps in evaluating the success of the changes that are made and implements all these changes to the planning cycle.

Conclusion

The school’s SDP is generally considered as a means of implementing certain changes. But, one must keep mind that these changes that take place in a school must also support the preservation of what has been working well in that school. It must provide a way of dealing with new developments coming in the way effectively to ensure school development where all the stakeholders make decisions and engage in planning their educational future.
