A doctor's appointment, also known as a medical office visit, a consultation, or a ward round in the sense of inpatient care, is a meeting between a patient and a physician to receive clinical advice or a treatment plan for a symptom or illness, usually in a professional health facility such as a doctor's office, clinic, or hospital. A physician usually sees between 50 and 100 patients per week, according to a study in the United States, though this varies by medical specialty and only slightly by population size, such as metropolitan versus rural areas.
Anatomy, physiology, pathology, and psychology are the four great cornerstones of diagnostic medicine. This means that the patient's socio-political background (family, job, stress, beliefs) should be evaluated because it also provides crucial clues to the patient's condition and subsequent management. A patient usually presents a series of problems (symptoms) to a doctor, who then conducts a diagnostic process that involves gathering additional details about the patient's symptoms, prior health, living circumstances, and so on. The doctor then conducts a review of systems (ROS) or systems inquiry, which consists of a series of questions about each main body system in the following order: general (such as weight loss), endocrine, cardio-respiratory, and so on. The physical examination and other medical examinations are then performed, and the results are registered, leading to a list of potential diagnoses.
