Teachers’ Day

Teachers’ Day is a special occasion that we should all be aware of because it is a day that gives recognition to those who are providing children with the necessary education. We need to prepare for it to better appreciate the educators of our community and make them feel that their work is valued by society.

Teachers’ Day Definition & Meaning

International Teachers’ Day or simply known as Teachers’ Day is a global observation honoring all the educators around the world.

Teachers’ Day, also called World Teachers’ Day, is an international celebration dedicated to teachers and serves as a call to respect and appreciate their honorable work.

When Is Teachers’ Day?

Teachers’ Day is celebrated annually on October 5. On this day every year, teachers are appreciated, assessed, and improved, while also providing them with opportunities to address issues related to their job.

Teachers’ Day History

In 1994, UNESCO established World Teachers’ Day and proclaimed that it be celebrated every year on October 5. Over three decades before, on October 5, 1966, the UNESCO/ILO Recommendation was adopted by the intergovernmental conference which established standards concerning teaching jobs. Hence, Teachers’ Day also became an observance to commemorate the adoption of the UNESCO/ILO Recommendation.

Teachers’ Day Purpose, Importance

Schools, colleges, and other education establishments celebrate World Teachers’ Day wholeheartedly, and it’s a significant yearly event for good reasons.

Appreciate Teachers

The very core of celebrating Teachers’ Day is to appreciate all the teachers in the world. On this day, students in kindergarten, elementary, high school, and college have something prepared for their dear teachers. Many of them will give their teachers flowers, thank you letters, greeting cards, and other gifts of appreciation.

Commemorate the Signing of the ILO/UNESCO Recommendation

Teachers’ Day commemorates the signing of the 1966 ILO/UNESCO Recommendation. It’s an important recommendation because it sets the proper guidelines concerning the rights and responsibilities of teachers. Without it, the appropriate standards regarding a teacher’s employment, classroom learning conditions, preparation, and further education wouldn’t have been established.

Raise Awareness of Every Teacher’s Struggles

Other than celebrating teachers, Teachers’ Day is also a symbol and a beacon for raising awareness of every teacher’s struggles. Countless teachers worldwide aren’t paid a satisfactory salary, don’t have access to learning-conducive environments, and don’t get enough support from their respective educational institutions. Some even resort to using their own money to purchase learning materials.

What’s in a Teachers’ Day?

On Teachers’ Day, teachers around the globe receive appreciation and love from their students. They receive gifts, flowers, and thank you letters. Some students sing, play music, and perform dance numbers as a tribute to their teachers. And some schools even conduct award ceremonies honoring their employed educators’ careers.
