“There is nothing to writing. All you do is sit down at a typewriter and bleed,” so goes Ernest Hemingway’s gem of a statement on his celebrated craft which has spurred controversies over the years as the author was a fan of New York Times sportswriter and Pulitzer Prize winner Red Smith whose exact words about writing were, “Writing is easy; all you have to do is open a vein and bleed.”

Both were talented in their own right. Hemingway inspired American literature and stories about him as a man never failed to fascinate American readers. Smith, on the other hand, influenced a generation of writers because of his literary wit and humor and went on to become one of America’s most loved sports columnists in history. Regardless of who really said what, no truer words were ever spoken. Anyone who writes for a living can tell you that. It takes a great deal of discipline and self-criticism to arrive at the final stages of one’s written work. It takes someone with guts to be brutally honest with himself to polish his work and rewrite it for about the nth time before he can finally say, this is it. You may also like best outline examples.

Hemingway or not, that dictum speaks for him and for so many others who pours himself into every piece of work he writes. Because that’s what it all comes down to. When others read your stories, they taste the seriousness of the work you have put on pen and paper template. And when you give them anything less, they will most certainly be able to sniff that too. Writing is a process

Your pen and paper, your laptop or typewriter font, are not enough to make an effective writer. No matter how advanced your writing tools are, none of them will be able to save you from the pitfalls of mental blocks and frustration. They are mere tools and they simply put your thoughts on record when you write them down but you have to rely on something much bigger than that to finish an article, an essay, a poem or a book. Even inspiration wouldn’t be enough. What good is being inspired and feeling so many things all at once to get yourself ready to write, when you cannot make sense of them? The possibility of being familiar with an overwhelming sense of ideas ready to flow into ink and paper isn’t being brushed aside.

The problem with too many ideas is that you wouldn’t know where to begin. You also risk being stuck after coming up with a few good sentences that don’t form anything tangible yet. In this case, taking it step by step can help turn those ideas into words and words into a paper in an organized manner. You see, the conventions of essay analysis are more reliant on process than you expect and in many occasions, they can be broken down and made easier by doing the math and counting to five. In short, writing an essay or a paragraph begins with a framework, and having that framework means you need to know how to form an outline for any type of written work.

Writing alone is an often dreaded task. Writing an essay? Well now, there’s an absolute challenge for those who don’t really consider themselves built for the craft. Writing isn’t easy even for literature and history’s most celebrated authors. It was never meant to be easy. But it is meant to be passionate. That is why only those who are passionate enough can really make it see their names and bylines on newspapers template, essays and later on, books. To write is an overwhelming task, but there are some steps you can take to help make it a little easier, and even make it an enjoyable, creative experience. Being able to break it down into manageable parts will be easier, so that you have a draft for what could be a successful essay later, for whatever you intend to use it for. Why do you need an outline?

Imagine having a box of legos or a portable closet with the instructions or manual missing. You still have a good chance to build something half decent but without having a clear picture of what it should look like, you would still probably end up with 3 plastic squares representing nothing at all, rather than a house. The same is true when it comes to writing an argumentative essay. You may have plenty of wonderful ideas swimming in your head and a lot of material for reference, including some notes but if you haven’t got an inkling as to how to put them in order, you will end up with a load of words and sentences that fails to make a point at all. The composition equivalent of a lego manual is your essay’s outline. Creating it before you start the actual writing process will make your ideas more understandable and your message more tangible in the end. If your smart goal is to write a successful essay (which is pointless if it’s otherwise), your thoughts need to be organized, so you can avoid making sloppy paragraphs. By making use of the stuff already in your mind and writing them down on paper, you would have a better chance of weeding out the useless pile of ideas that would make your work less coherent. The outline is the foundation for your final paper. Using a structure or a diagram will help you see which ideas connect and which ones are just interrupting with whatever message you aim to put across. You may also like sample research outlines.

Creating an outline

For starters, you need a topic before you can create an outline. Choosing a topic wouldn’t be so hard if you know which ideas connect the most. The rest is just a pile of drivel you can do without. Once you have chosen a topic, you have to make up your mind and stick to it, otherwise, you would be wasting time changing it again. Try to draw some lines with ideas branching out from the topic and then draw some more lines off of the main ideas, including your thoughts for each of them. This way, it will be better for you to see the connections which in turn would make the paragraphs more organized. The best time to have your paper organized is really before the actual writing is done, not when you are already writing or doing revisions. It will save you from the trouble of having to examine your first draft over and over again when it is already completed. Furthermore, it also gives you a better chance to check errors in your sentences when you finally sit down to write. In planning, ask yourself the necessary questions. What is my goal? What do I make out of the paragraphs I would have come up with? What type of message am I trying to put across? Is it limited to a specific genre, or is it a general message? Usually, when you are a student, it is all or one of those. But being able to answer thee questions allow you to structure your essay better. You may also like script outline templates.

For book reviews, you typically start with a summary and then move on to a critical analysis of the material. The conclusion may have an overall evaluation of the relevance of the book to past present and future societies but you can break it down into parts where your outline will be useful. If it is an essay for a specific issue, then you can start with a snappy statement and don’t lose the strength that statement holds, for the rest of your introduction. Tackle the issue from both sides but pick a stand and don’t forget backing it up with factual evidence. Give supporting details. If you are asked to pick a topic from a specific genre, then you will have more freedom to explore that topic from your point of view and make sure to pick something you are passionate about. If you choose to write something that doesn’t interest you at all, it will show. If you have no other choice, research the topic well and you will be able to form ideas and your own standpoint from there. Take heed of instructions because no professor will ever be the same when it comes to giving specific instructions for writing composition assignments. Make sure you understand the instructions well so that you can deliver your message well. Make sure you also believe in the message you are trying to portray, otherwise, you can’t expect your readers to believe it. You may also like formal outline templates.

Keep your paragraphs short and avoid verbal deadwood. Deadwood will not grant you any favors in presenting your points clearly. Essays may not present new topics but they do present new discussions. Play to your strengths. Some even let us share it with the class. When you’re done with your outline, read it and reread it. Check for errors and grammatical mistakes. Remember that the smallest mistakes can break what should have been a well-written piece. This probably wouldn’t be your first time, because, since grade school, English and literature teachers have always given us writing assignments. And every year it gets tougher, but far more fulfilling, since it takes a lot of effort to even come close to a “passable” piece. You may also like formal outlines.

The same basic rules apply so never mind if it isn’t worthy of the Smiths and Hemingways of the world. Be confident in putting down your ideas or stories on paper. Find your style and stick to it. Do not hesitate to be your own writer. Good writing does not happen overnight. It certainly doesn’t happen by accident either. It takes reading. And more reading. And then some more reading. It also takes practice to write. And then practicing to write more. And then some more. Because in writing, practice alone doesn’t make perfect. But it sure helps a lot. Don’t worry about producing masterpieces. Worry about being passionate about the thoughts you put on paper. Write to express. Write to bleed. You may also like blank outline templates.
