The debate about whether outlines are necessary or not in writing is still ongoing. Some writers think that the structure is appropriate while others believe that it is fine to write a project without bothering to write an outline at all. Although the arguments for not writing an outline for a book or a project are always somewhat convincing, it is important to understand that for readers who care to know the contents of your book or project before reading, writings without outlines never get the necessary attention as authors would expect them to. Therefore, it is only best to go ahead and start using an outline template for your writing project.
An outline template is a one-page editable document designed for those who have little time to create a new piece on their own. Let’s accept the truth: sitting behind your computer for hours trying to design a new outline every time you do a new project is quite energy-intense. Sometimes you have to think a little too much to get the model developed in a right way. Of course, you wouldn’t need to hire someone for the task because it’s something you can do by yourself, but it is highly unlikely that you are ever going to finish on time. A printable outline template eliminates the need to create an overview from the ground up because you can download a predesigned model, edit the writings by replacing them with your content, then using the template as part of your project.
Before a reader sits down to read a book, he does two things. First, he reads the prolog, usually a shorthand summary of the story. A Prolog gives the reader of a book the conceptual ideas presented in the writing. If the preliminary part is attractive, the reader develops an interest in reading the book. Secondly, he checks whether the book has an outline because he wants to know what makes the book. All this while, the reader hasn’t started the actual reading just yet. Reading the prolog and perusing through the outline is already a stable behavior pattern, and it is, therefore, the only best way to begin communication with your readers. Therefore, if you don’t have an outline template for your book, you are more than likely going to lose a bigger part of your readership.
Imagine you walk into a bookstore and you find an interesting book titled “Web Development for Beginners”. It is a 700-page book, so you conclude that it’s a perfect resource for learning site development. Now you go through the introductory section, and you find the book interesting. Because you know web development is a broad topic, you are much likely to check the outline.
To your surprise, though, you discover that the book has no outline at all, that the first page is blank, the second page IS blank, and the third page starts with the so-called acknowledgment, then the first chapter afterward. You wouldn’t dare read this book because you don’t know what to expect already. That’s pretty much the same way your readers will feel if your project or book doesn’t have an outline.
Therefore, a printable outline is quite a significant page of a book. It is the only concepts that will help readers decide whether to read your book or to consider alternatives. Make a book’s outline as interesting as the book itself, and you won’t have to worry about losing your readership.
