What Is a Follow-Up Survey?

A follow-up survey is a continuation of a previously sent survey. This survey’s purpose is to gather information about any changes in a product or service. Follow-up surveys may be sent multiple times to respondents through paper or online. The questions are interconnected with each other—from one printable survey to the next. Follow-up surveys still make use of a Likert Scale with Likert questions. Open-ended questions are also provided to let the respondents give their subjective opinions and recommendations. Their feedback is tabulated real-time by the surveyors by grouping them according to their demographics, e.g., age, gender, marital status, etc.

How to Create a Follow-Up Survey

Your follow-up survey should be aligned to what you want to be critiqued. Below, we have compiled tips on how to make your follow-up survey:

1. Choose a Medium of Your Choice

Choose a medium to use when making your survey. Programs with spreadsheets such as Microsoft Excel or Google Sheets will be perfect in making your simple form. Take time to explore these programs to exhaust all its functions. Once done, you may save the file for future use. 

2. Specify the Purpose of Your Survey

What is the purpose of your sample survey? Is it a continuation of a previous survey you have had? Specify it at the topmost part of the survey. Also, provide clear instructions to your respondents. Encourage your respondents to answer the survey truthfully to ensure improvement on your part. 

3. Use Likert Scale Questions

A Likert Scale is a type of rating scale that is used to measure responses of a survey. Your questions should coincide with the Likert Scale for your respondents to give appropriate responses. Each question should have a corresponding response anchor, e.g., from 5-Very Satisfied to 1-Very Dissatisfied

4. Keep Your Survey Short

Include only important questions in your survey—questions that will surely improve your services or operations. Avoid making your survey too long because people will be discouraged if they have to answer a time-consuming survey. 

5. Double-Check Your Survey Form

Your aim should be to provide a clear and a confusion-free survey form to your respondents. Double-check the survey form if it’s free from errors and make sure that the questions are straightforward and appropriate enough.

6. Offer Incentives to the Respondents

Most of the time, people do not have the leisure time to answer surveys because they are always in a “hurry”. But, if you are really that desperate (or determined), offer them incentives to get that feedback in no time. Incentives motivate people to answer a survey. After all, who would possibly say no to a wonderful surprise like a freebie?

Surveys, in general, are a form of constructive criticism. They allow the respondents to provide their comments and suggestions for the betterment of the company or business.
