The menu in a restaurant is a list of food and drinks offered to customers and prices. A menu can be à la carte, which offers a list of choices that customers select from, or table d'hôte in which case a pre-established sequence of courses is provided. Since the late 1990s, some restaurants have put their menus online. Menus are also often a feature of very formal meals other than in restaurants, for example at weddings.
Appetizers, "side orders and à la carte", entrées, desserts, and drinks are the main categories within a typical US menu. Things such as soups, salads, and dips can be on the sides and à la carte. For "seniors" or infants, there may be special age-restricted sections that present smaller parts at lower rates. For a different menu, such as desserts and/or drinks, or a wine list, each of these parts can be taken out. For example, a sandwich menu lists the types of sandwiches the cafe or restaurant is serving. To help keep children happy, children's menus can also be presented as placemats with games and puzzles. The menus can provide diners with other useful information too. Some menus define the food philosophy of the chef or owner, the résumé of the chef, or the restaurant's mission statement. In order to make the dishes look elegant and exotic, menus also illustrate the methods used to prepare foods, draw attention to exotic ingredients, and incorporate French or other foreign language phrases.
