Types of Essays

If you have fully understood the definition of an essay and what its purpose is, you are now ready to know what are the types of essays that are commonly written by writers and students around the world. In order for you to remember the different types of essays, we suggest that you take note of the following so that you would have something to rely on if ever your teacher or your editor asks you to write a topic in a specific essay type or style.

Here are the four major types of essay:

  • Narrative

From the word “narrative” itself, we can safely assume that this kind of essay is concerned with storytelling because it typically would tell a story. This kind of essay is more personal, anecdotal and experiential in its context. In writing this type of essay, the writer should make the reader visualize better what is being written and read. With this function, the reader gets more involved with the story. Narrative essays usually end with a statement from the essay writer.

  • Descriptive

A descriptive essay can be understood as one painting a picture. Instead of using actual paint, the writer uses words. The writer describes an emotion, an object, a feeling, a sound and etc. But this purpose of describing things goes beyond its corresponding definition. In a way, it lets us see a deeper connection to that certain emotion, sound, feeling, object and etc. It makes the readers illustrate and understand what the writer is trying to let us feel and experience.

  • Expository

The expository essay is more of a formal essay than a creative one such as the descriptive and narrative story possess. In this type of essay, it uses statistics and facts to guide the writing of the essay on a specific topic. It is not usually written in the first person because the writer does not express emotion or any kind of feeling. These kinds of essays are the formal “how to”, compare and contrast, cause, and effect. It covers a wide range of essay topics to talk about like issues around the world and putting your thoughts relating to the facts of that issue.

  • Persuasive

This can be a cousin to the expository essay because it also shows facts and statistical data. The only catch between the two is that the writer of a persuasive essay will try to let the reader accept his or her point of view. This type of essay can use information from other sources and expert on both sides of the argument. The end goal is to make it to a point that a reader would be convinced that one part of the argument is correct. It’s as simple as letting someone go to your side by smart opinions to convince someone.

These are basically the four major types of essays. Each of these types can help build and train your mind to its fullest and make it function better in the other aspects of your life that need thought processing, especially the ones that need to be processed fast. To master them, you have to have constant practice and the willingness to understand what they are in a deeper sense and perspective. Having the mastery of these types of essays can make you an excellent mentor to other people who are trying to be the best in their own way and pace. Make sure you share what you learn and master.
