A letter is a written message sent through a medium from one person (or group of people) to another. Newspapers and placards are examples of written content intended to be read in its original form by a large number of people; however, even these may contain material in the form of an "open letter." Letters can be formal or informal. Letter writing has played a role in the reproduction of writing as art throughout history, in addition to being a means of communication and a repository of knowledge. Letters have been exchanged since antiquity, and the Iliad mentions them.
Despite the popularity of email, letters are still widely used, especially in business and for official correspondence. Many "letters" are sent in electronic form at the same time. The sender composes and writes the letter, which may be folded to fit into an envelope. A folding machine may be used for bulk mailings. The sender inserts the letter into an envelope with the recipient's address written on the front of the envelope or visible through a transparent window. The sender double-checks that the recipient's address contains the Zip or Postal Code (if applicable) and, in the past, has often included his or her return address on the envelope. This process, depending on how far the sender is from the recipient, can take anywhere from a day to 3–4 weeks. International mail is sent via trains and airplanes to other countries.
