Sudoku sizes can vary depending on different factors like difficulty level and target audience. But at its core, Sudoku maintains a singular format which is a grid or square consisting of rows and columns.

Sudoku Sizes Standard

9×9

The classic version of the Sudoku puzzle is composed of 9 rows and 9 columns that together, form an equal-sized grid. This grid can be placed on standard Letter (8.5 x 11 inches) or A4 (8.3 x 11.7 inches) document size. It is important that there is adequate space for the grid or table to fit, and these default document sizes make an ideal canvas.

4×4

As mentioned earlier, Sudoku can have different levels of difficulty. The easiest level has a size of 4×4, which is 4 rows and 4 columns and a total of 16 squares. Just like in classic Sudoku, there are also cells or subgrids containing equal spaces for the player to input the numbers. The 4×4 size puzzle is recommended for young children who are either in kindergarten or elementary school.

For more advanced players, a 16×16 Sudoku definitely presents a greater challenge. The large 16×16 Sudoku size comprises 16 rows and 16 columns that form a grid of 256 squares. It is also sometimes called ‘Giant Sudoku’ and yet for some players, this size or version of Sudoku may even still be just medium difficulty or intermediate level for them.

The traditional Sudoku puzzle game can be found in regular publications like newspapers and books. But these days, it is easier and more convenient to play the game online. There are dozens of free platforms wherein you can play a round of Sudoku or even generate your own custom grid. If you prefer to do the latter, you can use online Sudoku generators or use a ready-made customized template. The recommended size for a digital Sudoku grid is 1200 pixels x 1200 pixels. This is to ensure that the image or grid is clear enough.

If you want to print out a Sudoku worksheet, the best size to go with is either US Letter size which measures 8.5 inches x 11 inches, or A4 size which has dimensions of 8.3 inches x 11.7 inches. When it’s converted to centimeters, Letter size measures 21.6 x 27.9 cm or 216 x 279 millimeters. A4 paper size is 210 x 297 millimeters or equivalent to 21 x 29.7 centimeters. You can choose whether to use landscape or portrait orientation, depending on how many blocks or cells there are in your Sudoku puzzle. But a standard 9×9 grid should fit a portrait size document.

Sudoku is a wildly popular casual game and there are a lot of puzzle-themed books that can be purchased in bookstores and online shops. These commercial publications are usually 6 x 9 inches in size but there are some Sudoku books that are much bigger, with dimensions measuring 8.5 x 11 inches.

Photoshop is a popular and versatile graphics app. It is used for all kinds of projects and designs, including puzzles and games. To create a Sudoku grid using Adobe Photoshop, you need to establish the proper format first. To achieve a good quality image, it is recommended to set the dimensions to a pixel size of 1200 x 1200 px. As for the resolution, it is best to set it to at least 300 DPI or dots per inch.

Presentation Sizes for Adobe Illustrator

Another excellent alternative to Adobe Photoshop is Adobe Illustrator. Although it is required that you have some knowledge and skill on how to use the application. Nonetheless, users can learn how to create a simple Sudoku grid or table on Illustrator. And similar to Photoshop, you want to have a minimum of 1200 pixels x 1200 pixels for your image file. This is to ensure overall good quality outcome, with grid lines that are clearly defined.
