How Is Knowledge Assessed?

Knowledge is assessed in many ways. Teachers come up with their own devices in doing such thing. Their main aim is to test how much the student has learned. In assessing the student’s knowledge, they come up with these tests:

1. Written exams.

A written exam is the most common method to test the student’s learning. In a multiple choice exam, students are made to choose answers on a given question. Only one answer can be right. It tests their judgement skills in choosing the right answer. Same goes for true or false examinations. In essay writing examinations, students write about a given topic in a limited number of words. They have to make the most out of everything that comes in the test paper. You may also see security risk assessment templates.

2. Output-based exams.

Output-based examinations fall under practical exams. With this, students make a certain output based on the exam question given by the teacher and it should be submitted on a particular date. The ideas and learning are invested on the output. The teachers can determine how much a student has learned through the given criteria he set, and the creativity a student gives on the project. This kind of exam allows students to practice what they have learned and find ways to come up with a creative and well-thought output. If it is given as a group work, it also tests their teamwork and loyalty to each other. Some of the most common output-based exams are audiovisual output, term papers, and essays. 3. Concept-based exams.

In a concept-based exam, students answer a question without using a yes or a no. It usually means long questions to be answered. They are made to predict a future outcome out of a given situation and what would happen if there is a slight change to it. It tests the students’ ability to apply rules to new situations. In a concept-based exam, answers are long and detailed. Students are asked which step fits best in a given situation, and what would happen if the value of a variable is changed into a certain amount. Critical thinking is tested in this kind of exam. 4. Concept map exercises.

In a concept map exercise, students are asked about a certain issue. They gather up related concepts that suits the question and organize them. This tests the organizations skills of the students. Making a concept map is a tough task to do, especially when you lack research to back up your concepts. You may also see skills assessment templates.

Why Is Knowledge Assessed?

In a school term, students have to go through many exams to put their knowledge into test. While it is one of the main reasons for knowledge assessment, there are still other reasons why knowledge is assessed. Here are some of them:

1. To test student’s learning.

As a teacher, you are tasked to prepare every exam paper and module that will test the student’s learning. It is not only done through written exams but also in practical exams as well. In practical exams students are given as certain time period to come up with an output related to the topic given by the teacher. The teacher comes up with a criteria for it to be graded fairly. 2. To know if they learned well.

After checking the papers, you would have an idea on the students who learned a lot from you and those who did not. It should not bother you as a teacher. Instead, make it a motivation to help those who are struggling academically. They need your guidance more than ever. Your role as a teacher is to mold students not just in academics but in how he lives his life. You may also see project assessment templates.

3. To know each of their inclinations.

The results will tell you about the student’s strongest areas in academics. Some are inclined to mathematics, others lean more on the language and literary side. Some are a balance of both. You now have an idea on how to encourage them when they take college entrance exams. Not all students have the same inclination. It is a given fact that one excels in a certain field and the other excels in another field. You may also see self-assessment templates.

4. To help students in their weakest areas.

Every student has their own weakest subjects. It is a subject that they hate or have a hard time learning since they can’t understand a thing. It is your job to help them acquire more learning and practice in this area. Be it mathematics, science or language, each subject needs more practice and intense studying. 5. To encourage them to study harder.

It is also your job as their teacher to encourage them to study harder. They can do better when they study well and when they have someone to cheer them on. Encouragement can do many wonders to a person’s self-esteem, way of hard work and outlook in life. You may also see technology assessment templates.
