Points to Consider Before Suspending Students
The principal who is responsible for the suspension of the students must consider the individual student. This simply means that the students that are involved in the same incident may not face the same consequences. The principal is free to decide on different consequences for each student based on the other factors. The principal will consider the following justifying factors:
- The age of the student.
- The history of the student, for instance, disciplinary history, whether the progressive discipline has already been tired or if the student has any personal history such as recent trauma, etc.
- Whether the student can control his/her behavior.
- Whether the student can understand the possible consequences of his/her behavior.
- Whether the student’s presence in the school creates an unacceptable risk to anyone else on the premises.
- The principal must also consider whether the behavior of the student is related to harassment because of the student’s race, ethnic origin, religion, gender, disability, or any other type of harassment.
- The principal must also consider how the discipline will affect the student’s ongoing education.
What Does Suspension Mean?
A suspension simply means that the students are removed from the school temporarily for a specific period. The students may be suspended for a period ranging from one school day to twenty school days. Pupils suspended for more than five days of school are termed on long-term suspension. Students are not allowed to participate in school activities or events while being suspended.

Students may be suspended only by the principal.
How To Inform the Parents?
The principal shall make every fair effort to inform the parents or guardians of the student within 24 hours when the students are suspended. A letter notifying them about the suspension will be followed which will include important information such as
- The reason for the suspension.
- The length of the suspension.
- The information on the right to appeal the suspension.
- The supervisory’s officer’s contact information, if the parents have questions.
- Students who are on the long-term suspension will receive information about the program to which they are assigned.
Factors That Lead to Suspension
A suspension will be viewed whether the incident occurs at school, during a school-related activity such as a field trip, or in any other situation where the behavior of the student harms the school climate. This may include practices like cyberbullying. Cyberbullying is bullying happening by devices, such as email or a cell phone.

If students have participated in any of the events mentioned below, the principal must seek a suspension. We encompass:

Can You Appeal Suspensions?
All kinds of suspensions can be appealed to the school board. You just have to send a written notice of the request for an appeal to the supervisory officer of the board within 10 school days. This appeal must be heard within 15 school days of the board receiving the notice of the appeal until the parents and the school board has agreed in an extension. The students may be suspended for a period of one to twenty school days and those students who are suspended for more than 5 school days are regarded as long-term suspension.
