What we learn inside the four walls of the school is nothing compared to what is outside. Theories, books, and all other learning materials are not enough to educate us about the reality of the world. What we need is immersion, where the theories come to life and deepen our book knowledge. We will then realize that theories without application will remain theories themselves. Aside from its fun learning experience, we may even get the chance to find our true calling.

Field trips weave the theory and the reality of learning. It provides clarity and a deeper understanding of knowledge-hungry children. And learning should go hand-in-hand with safety. Nobody should have to risk their safety in hopes of seeking elevated knowledge. To establish rules and regulations regarding field trip safety, field trip policies should be observed.

What Is a Field Trip Policy?

A Field Trip Policy is a policy containing the measures that are permitted and restricted in the entire trip (whether local or international). The policy contains the maximum number of days of each trip, chaperones, medications, responsibilities of both students and teachers, etc. The purpose of this policy is to set rules regarding the safety of the students participating. Students of different ages have special needs, especially the younger ones. The younger ones are more prone to danger, considering their obliviousness to their surroundings. Therefore, they need double guidance compared to the higher levels.

The Positive Effects of Field Trips

Field trips have personal benefits for the students. Studies have shown that students from rural and poverty-stricken schools benefit more from field trips compared to students from urban areas. The same study shows that there is an increase in critical thinking, tolerance, interest in art museums, and historical empathy.

Art provides a different kind of outlook to students. A fresh set of lenses if you will. Art portrayals trigger a set of emotions in students that increases historical empathy, tolerance, and cultural appreciation. Aside from the advantages of field trips, it also has its fair share of disadvantages. Among these are the lack of faculty to handle rowdy or unruly children and the limited budget.

How to Make a Field Trip Policy

A field trip policy covers a wide range of rules and regulations intended for the students’ safety. It must be comprehensive and confusion-free. Having trouble with what to include in your policy? Here are the tips below:

1. Make Historical Data as Your Source

If your school previously has a field trip policy, you can use this as a source for your revised field trip policy. If your previous field trip policy lacks the pertinent information you need, you can seek the help of school administrators. Also, do not be afraid to make other school’s field trip policies as your reference.

2. Start With the Basics

Before each field trip, your school should already set the maximum number of days for the field trip or excursion. Since your school is comprised of kids of different ages, the longevity of the field trip should depend on the kids’ ages. For example, prekindergarten and kindergarten students should only consume half of the day while the whole day can only be consumed by elementary and high school students. You must also state if overnight field trips are allowed.

3. Issue Permission Slips

For every trip outside the school’s premises, the parents’ consent or authorization must be sought. This is to inform them that an upcoming trip is about to take place. The conditions are inscribed in the slip or authorization form stating that they are aware of the possible risks outside the school. They are given two options: either they allow their child to participate, or not. If they choose the latter, they are required to provide a reason. This will then be noted by the adviser.

Parents are also to provide their contact numbers in the permission slips if anything happens to their children.

4. Include Student Medications

For students with medications for health conditions, the teacher should be notified prior to the day of the field trip. The student shall be given the option to bring a chaperone or be exempted from the field trip. Or, if the student’s health condition is too serious for an outside activity, then he or she must be exempted from the trip for his or her safety.

You can also require your school nurse to come along to ease the anxiety of the parents.

5. Provide an Itinerary for the Parents

There is nothing more comforting than the fact that parents are aware of the whereabouts of their children. You should make it a protocol that parents are to be provided an itinerary of the trip. The itinerary should start from the first stop and the expected length of stay until the last stop. You should also include the departure time and arrival, the mode of transportation, the number of adults supervising the trip, and the medical professionals participating in the trip.

Your aim is to pacify the parents and assure them that no danger will befall their children. That this educational trip will do more good than harm.

6. Include Field Trip Fees

The budget is one of the factors holding back a student from attending the field trip. Be inclusive and considerate when establishing the trip fees. Make the trip as affordable for the parents as possible. Money should not become a hindrance to learning. Inform the parents about the fees ahead of time to give them time to prepare the amount.

Before field trip policies are established, a field trip must be included in the curriculum. Field trip policies are established by the school to ensure the safety of the students. With all the apparent danger in our society, we need to secure the safety of the children by staying on the safe side. Anything can happen outside the school’s premises—so you should anticipate what potential harm will come to the students.

Your policy needs revision now and then to increase the security levels of your students. Field trip policies do not only benefit the students, but also the school itself. Make it clear in your policy that you care for the students as much as their parents care for them.
